𝐈'𝐌 𝐀𝐖𝐄𝐒𝐎𝐌𝐄, 𝐑𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓? Imagine two colleagues sitting at a picnic table outside of the office… Gwen: We make fun of bosses, but I admit some employees are awful. Avery: Yea, but not me. Gwen: Same. When is break over? Avery: Thirty minutes ago. In this little hobby of mine, I make fun of leaders a lot, so I’m trying to remember to focus on employees too. Not hard – we’re all so imperfect. You could frame this in terms of confirmation bias, ego protection, in-groups/out-groups, etc. The point: we’re good at interpreting things in a manner that casts us in a positive light! That’s right – they’re crazy, but I’m awesome! Even in the face of evidence to the contrary. It’s functional in some ways, but not terribly helpful from the perspective of managing relationships or personal growth. The goal is first to build a little more self-awareness so you can become less full of it. Busy and loud (office life!) are the enemy of self-awareness. Carve out time on a regular basis to find a quiet place so you can focus. Think and write. Darn right – we all need a space to journal. Question everything, including yourself. Especially yourself. Also, try to lighten up and laugh at these realities. We could use a little more levity and humor. Happy Friday … hang in there – you’re almost to another parole weekend! ;) #humor #careers
This reminds me of the quip, "enough about me, what do you think about me?". 😊
This made me smile. Self-awareness gets harder the busier we get. Taking time to pause, question our assumptions, and laugh at ourselves a little usually makes us better leaders and teammates.
nah, I am safe, because having grown up with a Balkan mum, you get absolutely NO option to bragging about yourself - just check all the memes online!
OMG when I finally found the path to levity and humor in self reflection, all humanity became palatable. I love the ease in seeing one self when it's all a big joke. Thanks for the reminder to laugh more. Makes me want to send you the dozens of hilarious GIFs I proudly excavated from the interwebs during my COVID isolation...it's my proudest COVID outcome (and I guess the birth of my son...).
