There’s a fundamental shift underway in how the physical world operates. For decades, industrial intelligence has largely been human-led, built on experience, intuition, and manual processes. What’s changing now is not just automation, but the systematic embedding of intelligence into machines, workflows, and infrastructure through software, data, and AI. This transition from human-centric decision-making to system-level intelligence feels similar to what software did for digital businesses over the last two decades. This time, it is happening across manufacturing, logistics, energy, and broader physical industries. The scale of impact is likely to be much larger. At Inflexor Ventures, we have been spending time thinking about this shift and where value will accrue. Five years of R&D. One question I didn't know I was asking: how does technical innovation actually become value? A commentary on Nassim Taleb's Incerto is ambitious for an intern. Five essays applied to engineering emerged out of that thought process. I thought I was writing about how technology needs to be antifragile, but I was really writing about how people working on it need to think about what they're doing. More reading and more writing commentary on Naushad Forbes' book on Indian industrial potential. Then a piece on why industrial PhDs fail. Then a talk at IIT Madras, yielding an article on the academia-industry gap. Today I'm looking back at sifting through 5,000 deep tech startups across 75+ global incubators — evaluating business cases at the intersection of materials science, cleantech, and industrial technology. For years, Indian startups largely chased digital-first opportunities. Now, investors are beginning to back something much harder: Biology-first companies. StrainX Bioworks has raised $13 million in funding led by Prime Ventures (VC) and Leo Capital. At first glance, this may look like another deeptech funding round. Look closer, and it reflects something bigger: Indian venture capital is slowly moving beyond software. Because unlike SaaS or consumer startups, biotech companies scale through: • scientific research • proprietary IP • deep R&D • breakthrough innovation This also makes them significantly harder to build. Founded by IIT Delhi alumni Mittal and Alok Malviya, StrainX Bioworks operates in synthetic biology and biotechnology, sectors attracting increasing global attention because of their applications across healthcare, pharma, manufacturing, agriculture, and sustainability. And India is still extremely early here. For years, biotech innovation was concentrated in ecosystems like the US, Europe, Israel, and China, while India largely participated through manufacturing and outsourcing. That narrative is beginning to shift. Investors are now starting to back Indian startups capable of building original science and globally defensible biological technologies. From a VC lens, this matters because deep-science startups operate differently from traditional software businesses. In SaaS, speed often matters most. In biotech, defensibility matters more: • technical depth • IP ownership • scientific talent • long-term research capability And globally, some of the largest future opportunities are expected to emerge at the intersection of AI, biology, healthcare, and computational science. Which means the next generation of venture-scale companies may increasingly be built not only by software engineers, but also by scientists and researchers. The larger takeaway is not just that StrainX raised capital. It is that India’s startup ecosystem is slowly evolving from: “Can we build scalable software?” to “Can we build globally defensible innovation?” And historically, that is where some of the most durable value gets created. The IITM Incubation Cell has grown into one of India’s leading deep-tech startup ecosystems over the last 13 years — incubating 567 startups with a combined portfolio value of nearly ₹75,000 crore. In conversation with AIM Network’s Tech Talk series, IITM Incubation Cell CEO Dr Tamaswati Ghosh reflected on the lessons behind building this ecosystem from the ground up. From joining Indian Institute of Technology, Madras unexpectedly in 2013 to helping shape an incubation model that now supports startups across AI, space, robotics, health tech, semiconductors, quantum computing, energy, and defence, she highlighted the importance of patient capital, founder resilience, strong mentorship, and ecosystem-driven innovation. The conversation also explored how IIT Madras alumni became early believers in deep tech, why founder quality matters more than ideas alone, and how India’s startup future lies in solving large-scale real-world problems. Importantly, the discussion reinforced a larger shift in focus — from chasing valuations to building revenue-generating, IPO-ready companies that create long-term impact, jobs, and wealth for the country.
