🧰 Expert ZBrush Tip: Control Edge Sharpness with Dynamic Subdiv + Crease Levels When working on complex architectural frames, drapery, or ornate designs Use Dynamic Subdiv (D) to preview a smoothed result without committing to heavy subdivisions. Pair it with Crease Levels (Geometry > Crease > CreaseLvl) so you can control how many subdivision levels a crease will hold before softening. Example: Set CreaseLvl = 2 and Smooth Subdiv = 5. This keeps edges crisp for the first two subdivisions, then gradually softens them, giving a natural stone-carved or cloth-draped feel. ✨ Pro Move: Combine this with Polygroups + Crease PG to selectively preserve hard edges (like columns, frames, or base panels) while letting organic parts (like cloth folds or facial details) smooth naturally. This method gives you precision control—sharpened architectural detail next to soft organic sculpting—without manually polishing or over-dividing the mesh.

The Polyopticon device concept was first based on a soccer ball, or “Bucky Ball”; a truncated icosahedron, with 32 faces. As originally envisioned, each face could be a display screen, and multiple faces/displays could be combined to form expanded views. Then, as the device was manipulated in 3D space to follow and/or create information streams on displays in different locations, motions and viewing durations across these multiple screens would be recorded and combined to form what the inventor dubbed “timeline objects”, 4D records of complex seek patterns. Ostensibly, these records would then enable more comprehensive recall, display, and communication of information, research, and findings. In the original thinking, this device would also be collapsible, and fit into a briefcase. I came on board as the team’s industrial designer, tasked with creating the first mockup of a Polyopticon device. However, a simpler Archimedean solid, the rhombicuboctahedron, with (only…) 20 faces, was ultimately chosen as the development mule, for two main reasons: 1) fewer faces would make prototyping less complex, and 2) this shape (right, below) has three continuous midlines, each offering collapsible potential. We all agreed about the shape, and now we needed an application example for the first look-and-feel prototype. To be continued…

That’s a good thing because bringing an idea to life at scale requires collaboration, flexibility, and a strong design foundation that can adapt without breaking. Why does this matter? Because the best products—the ones that actually make it to market and perform—are the result of designers staying involved. 🤩New cover for #NanoLetters by Ella Maru Studio Inc! Brain-insired Engineering 🧠 On the coverart we depicted liquid artificial #synapses which were engineered with copper-based #electrolytes. The liquid-medium, enabled to better emulate the ionic movements associated with learning in the brain, making this approach close to #biovoltages. Here is a work in progress showing a visualization of activation of a station plaza using 3DStreet > Flux Kontext Pro RealEarth > Veo3 workflow. I'm grateful to the team at Los Angeles Metro Transit Oriented Communities Strategic Initiatives for partnering and especially their patience & guidance as we experiment with different techniques to pull higher res outputs from sparse Google Earth 3D Tiles and low poly scene assets. This workflow is still under development -- we still have more work to do to meet visual quality expectations -- but it's fun to see such rapid progress with our partners.
