Today's advancements in #SLA #3D printing materials are challenging the limits, producing components that equal or even exceed the mechanical qualities of widely used #FDM materials such as #PLA, #PETG, and #ABS. In a recent durability assessment, a 6.8 kg mass was utilized, and various brackets were 3D printed using different substances on both FDM and SLA printers. For FDM: PLA, PETG, and ABS were tested—these materials are popular but exhibit anisotropic properties, meaning they are less robust in certain orientations. Working with injection-molded soft materials comes with its own set of challenges...and opportunities. Having the in-house capability to 3D print in materials like TPU allows us to test for things like infill density, overall softness, flexibility, and where potential pain points might come up during real world use. We’re able to make informed design decisions early, reducing cost risk and improving comfort, durability, and usability in the final product. This is essential during design development, It allows us to iterate quickly, validate assumptions, and move into manufacturing with confidence. At CDFAM in NYC this year, Andrew Sink presented the work they did with fizik to build the computational design and manufacturing workflow to create custom bike saddles that were used by 𝟲 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝟭𝟬 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗲 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲, including the overall winner Tadej Pogačar. The most unique thing we do at FSD is run novel sustainable materials through simulations of manufacturing processes. In 2023 we developed a paper with seaweed in it. We wanted to try vacuum molding it, and had to figure out how to do it inexpensively on a small-scale. Most paper molding is done at a massive scale with stainless steel mesh tooling. Making the tooling is a meticulous and costly process requiring detailed machining and expert labor. Manufacturers can prototype short runs, but we needed to develop the material further before convincing them to put it on their pilot line. Here’s how we did that. When going from paper sheets to molded paper pulp, we found a way to 3D print our own tools with an FDM to allow for quick iteration, saving money and time. Attempt #1: Nope. The lattice design looked like it would work in CAD but clogged instantly with pulp. Air couldn’t pass through the vacuum and the molded wall was patchy and thin.  Attempt #2: We opened the lattices. The pulp passed through the mesh instead of sticking to the mold wall. Attempt #3 (Final Final): We designed a variable lattice structure: dense on the contact surface for a smooth finish, but loose and open everywhere else to allow for even and rapid water drainage. This allowed us to: - Run small-batch tests in-house.   - Iterate design elements like draft angles and wall thicknesses swiftly. - Bridge the gap between "lab experiment" and "pilot scale." Innovation isn't just about the material; it's about the tooling required to shape it. Simulating manufacturing processes can help validate your hypothesis when your material hasn’t been used in a manufacturing setting before. CMF might be the quietest part of product design but it’s also the most persuasive. After years working across CMF, here are 10 design hacks that keep showing up on the most effective projects. Small moves, big impact. --- 1. Shift one element, not three. If you're changing colour, keep texture and gloss levels consistent. That restraint builds clarity. --- 2. Swatch less, context more. Review in scale and shape. A material can behave beautifully flat but fall apart on form. --- 3. Use contrast to guide the eye. It’s not just black and white. Think dense vs diffuse, matte vs pearl, raw vs precise. -- 4. Design for the second glance. That tiny speckle, subtle emboss or colour shift might not shout but it invites people in. --- 5. Think in temperatures, not just tones. A cool grey next to a warm neutral can shift the whole product feel. --- 6. Celebrate process. Let tooling marks, recycled content or printed textures become part of the story, not something to hide. --- 7. Don't chase trends, channel intention. Is your palette calm, expressive, precise, technical? Let that lead. --- 8. Know your hero. If a product has one signature surface or detail, amplify it. Everything else should support it. --- 9. Test with touch. No matter how good it looks, if it feels off, it’s off. --- 10. Leave room for light. Nostalgia Meets Precision: The Power of Color Design Markers In a world dominated by pixels and tablets, there is a tangible joy in picking up a color design marker. For industrial designers, illustrators, and artists, these tools evoke nostalgia—the scent of the ink, the satisfying click of the cap, and the direct connection between hand and paper. (Admittedly, I hate (jealous really) all of you who can sketch and render in perspective! I am a draftsman at heart and thrive with orthagonal views!) ;-) The brass rendering of a widget shown here proves that traditional tools are far from obsolete, even if they may be (a lot) slower. Design markers had their day. But, this style of product sketching lives on with digital tablets! Features and Benefits: - Speed & Flow: Enables quick iteration and fast visualization of concepts without technical setup. - Layering & Blending: Allows for smooth, graduated transitions, essential for rendering complex materials like glass, chrome, and brass. - Tactile Connection: The direct hand-to-paper feel promotes intuitive design thinking and problem-solving. - Unique Look: Creates expressive, slightly imperfect textures and vibrant color depth that digital tools often struggle to replicate. - Portfolio Impact: Original, hand-rendered artwork stands out, demonstrating a high level of core drawing skill and dedication.
