The best career advice doesn’t come from job postings. Learning from people who’ve navigated the journey can make all the difference. To that end, I spoke with several managers on my team at Lenovo who have built careers around improving interactions and designing intuitive experiences. For job seekers, here's some advice from my team on landing your ideal UX/CX role: 🧭 Follow the Work, Not Just the Job Title “There’s no single definition for a CX or UX professional. They go by many titles and come from diverse backgrounds—engineering, marketing, research, customer support, business analytics, etc. But the great ones are always customer-obsessed and no stranger to collaboration. So don’t feel boxed in by traditional career paths, find something you’re passionate about and make it matter to the business.” [Dilip Bhatia, VP, Global CXO] ❤️ Don’t Underestimate Soft Skills “Certifications show ability but assessing if someone’s a culture fit can be just as important. Every company will have defined values (usually posted on their website) and you may be asked to describe your work style, communication preferences, and expectations. Think about your deal breakers, and be prepared to share personal stories of teamwork, problem-solving, or any attributes that define you with the understanding that managers are checking for compatibility.” [Mei Holthausen, ED – Employee Digital Experience & Operational Comms] 💡Demonstrate Your Adaptability Skills “The world is changing, and success belongs to those who can evolve with it. Be a Sensemaker. “UX continues to expand and evolve. Candidates should demonstrate mental agility and desire to learn combined with persistent customer centricity. The evolution of AI showcases how we must progress our thinking while never losing sight of what matters to the user. Also, the problems UX talent now handle are increasingly complex. Today’s conversation at the City of Irvine’s “From Startup to Scale” event (Hangar 244, OC Great Park) reinforced something I’ve experienced firsthand as a first-generation founder—and something I see many immigrant and first-generation entrepreneurs continue to face: access to capital too often depends on who you know, not just what you’re building. Can technologies like Computer Vision, AI and RFID be used to improve the customer experience at a retail location? Quick answer is "of course"! But the question is how can it be done efficiently enough (getting leverage from your labor expenses) to reduce customer transaction time whilst enhancing the customer experience. At a high level, retailers who take a multi-signal capture approach to inventory management will be able to unlock the benefits of reducing transaction times and customer checkout interventions. The bigger goal is to remove customer friction, and make it easier for customers to buy by also reducing the cognitive load from multiple decisions. and maybe there should be an exchange between retailer and customer for the additional benefit. Interesting article in #CampusIDnews: "In an interview with CampusIDNews, Al Padilla, Cal Poly Pomona’s Senior Manager for Retail IT, explained these frictionless systems. He says the AI-driven checkout solution from Mashgin allows students to enter a store, grab items, and leave without physically scanning products or handing over a card. At Pomona, these stations have slashed checkout times from 90-seconds or more to just 12.5 seconds. This has virtually eliminated lines, and without lines students are less likely to pass the stores if time is tight." Any solution explored will have to take sku density, count and complexity among other factors into account. The bigger question is: Can this serve as a gateway into bringing customers into a retailer's ecosystem in order to serve then better? That can be the exchange! Educators are eager to hear from industry about how to address the engineering skills gap. Is your business joining the conversation? For Dean Ian Williamson of the University of California, Irvine’s (UCI) Paul Merage School of Business, industry and academia need to do more than partner together: They need to co-design the curriculum. “We have expertise around how to create learning environments. However, we’re not always clear on what exactly we should be training, and we may not always have access to the latest tools either."
