That was 43 years ago, which is slightly alarming for those of us who remember watching it the first time around. This was before the web, Google, Wi-Fi and smartphones. Modems made noises like two robots arguing in a biscuit tin, computers had less processing power than your watch, and connecting to another computer actually felt rather exciting. Lightman went looking for unreleased computer games and accidentally found his way into a US military system. He then managed to come remarkably close to starting World War III. We've all made mistakes with technology, but that's setting the bar fairly high. What makes WarGames interesting today is that the basic hacking techniques don't seem particularly ancient. Lightman searched for systems, researched the people behind them, worked out possible passwords and exploited poor security. The technology has changed beyond recognition, but human behaviour hasn't kept pace. Weak passwords, badly configured systems and the comforting assumption that “nobody will ever find this” are still perfectly capable of causing serious security problems. We have spent billions improving cybersecurity while continuing to rely on people who think their dog's name followed by 123 is an acceptable password. The cleverer warning in WarGames, though, wasn't really about hackers. It was about automation. WOPR, the military computer, was trusted with increasingly important decisions because computers were considered more dependable than humans. Unfortunately, nobody had adequately considered what might happen if the computer misunderstood what it was doing. A simulation became indistinguishable from reality, and suddenly everyone wanted the humans back in charge. Forty-three years later, we're enthusiastically connecting AI to business processes, infrastructure, financial systems and organisational decision-making. The technology is vastly more capable than anything portrayed in WarGames, but the underlying problem hasn't disappeared. Automating a decision doesn't remove the risk associated with that decision. If the assumptions are wrong, automation can simply make the wrong decision considerably faster and at a much greater scale. Perhaps that's why WarGames has aged surprisingly well. Beneath the enormous monitors, screeching modems and 1980s hairstyles was a warning that remains extremely relevant: giving technology more authority requires us to understand its limitations. WOPR eventually worked that out after playing through countless scenarios and concluded that sometimes the only winning move is not to play.

After a month of conversations across Silicon Valley, from AI Infra Summit to Innovation in Action to Dreamforce to Stanford board training sessions to HTEC’s Executive AI Dinner, I kept hearing the same thing: The CEO matters in the AI Execution. Three reasons why: 1. People copy what the CEO does. Executives average just 1.5 hours a week using AI. But BCG found CEOs leading AI transformation spend more than 8 hours a week building their own skills. If the CEO is experimenting, learning and sharing, everyone else gets permission to move. 2. The CEO sets the trust level. AI adoption is increasingly a people and process problem, not a technology problem. Employees need clear guardrails, communication and confidence that using AI is encouraged and safe. 3. The CEO determines whether AI becomes real work. Training, validation and the “glue work” of AI adoption often land on middle managers. CEOs decide whether that work gets recognized, measured and rewarded or simply added to everyone’s workload. IBM found CEOs believe only 25% of their workforce uses AI regularly. See my article in Forbes So here’s the question I think every leadership team should ask: How many hours a week does your CEO actually use AI? That number may tell you more about your AI transformation than your AI strategy deck.

But, as I always told my team at ONR, my motto is "family first, always" -- and I mean it. So I'm passing the baton of my full-time government service in order to move home to Chattanooga and better support our growing family. I'm honored to still have the opportunity to support the mission of harnessing America's unparalleled innovation for national security in a new role at Red Cell Partners. Their technology is amazing, their team is unparalleled, and their motto is "let's build, together" -- so anyone who knows me should immediately understand why I'm so excited. Stay in touch, and let's get to work!

'Look at us, how glorious we are.' And then we go off. That, I think, is what’s not working. Because I think the real world wants to know a couple of things: One is that this is technology that they can use for their benefit, they can control, they can have an economic future. These data centers that may be coming to their communities are actually going to create economic surplus... it has to be real for them. Any amount that I say or any one of us say is not good enough anymore, I feel." Link to full convo in comments.

This year, thousands of individuals and 122 teams pushed through exhaustion to climb these seemingly interminable steps. Why? To raise nearly $1 million for the 𝗞𝗲𝘁𝗰𝗵𝘂𝗺-𝗗𝗼𝘄𝗻𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗬𝗠𝗖𝗔's free and low-cost, life-changing programs for children and families. During the LA wildfires, the YMCA provided hot showers, childcare and gym memberships to wildfire survivors. And the firefighters? They take it to another level.🔥 Wearing roughly 𝟲𝟬 𝗽𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗣𝗘 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝗮𝗿, firefighters fearlessly raced up the winding stairwells. Last year, Ted Ross, City of LA CIO, inspired me by setting an incredible pace and leading our Innovate@UCLA team. This year, I hit my goal: 18:57. This shaves off over a minute from last year's 20:13! Huge thanks to our team members and Rory Devine, YMCA board member, for showing up for this important cause. Rory has been doing this climb for over 10 years! Reach out to Rory or me to join next year. After the climb, I still haven't felt the dreaded spaghetti legs in Tae Kwon Do and at the gym this weekend. But tomorrow's forecast? We'll see if the sign was right. 😂 💪💪

Rachel Bondi liked thisRachel Bondi liked thisThe U.S. Coast Guard has turned to an experienced Navy IT executive to be its next #CIO. Congratulations to Scott St. Pierre on his appointment to serve as Coast Guard Assistant Commandant, Program Executive Officer for C5I, and Chief Information Officer. Scott brings nearly four decades of combined active, contractor, and civil servant Navy experience to his new role. Most recently, he served as Director of Enterprise Networks and #Cybersecurity for the Navy and as the Navy's Principal Cyber Advisor. Scott's selection is a change for the #CoastGuard as the past three CIOs were Rear Admirals (Rusty Dash, Chris Bartz and Bob Day), dating back to 2009. Coast Guard Commandant Kevin Lunday has prioritized technology as part of the CG's new strategic plan (Force Design 2028). Best wishes Scott as you get underway! #HomelandSecurity

Justin Fanelli, Chief Technology Officer for the US Navy and Technical Director of PEO Digital, is being honored in Category 4: Using Innovative Technologies to Deliver Simple, Seamless, and Secure Services for transforming how the Navy delivers, evaluates, and invests in technology. Through World Class Alignment Metrics (WAMs) and initiatives like the expansion of Flank Speed, Justin and his team have used performance and user experience data to drive modernization, reducing computer boot times and latency by more than 80% and giving personnel more time to focus on their missions. Justin also spearheaded Operation Cattle Drive, an effort to retire obsolete IT systems and streamline the Navy’s technology portfolio. Together, these efforts have generated multi-billion-dollar cost avoidance, allowing resources to be redirected toward modern capabilities and national security priorities. Read his full story here: https://lnkd.in/dg-nFG4c 👏 Congratulations, Justin, for eliminating technology barriers, improving digital experiences, and helping build a more efficient, agile, and technologically advanced Navy! #ServiceToTheCitizen #STTCAwards #USNavy #DigitalTransformation #Technology #Innovation #PublicService
