Researchers at UC Berkeley Engineering will soon have access to a multimillion-dollar semiconductor manufacturing system that will enable the fabrication of nanoscale semiconductor devices for next-generation chip technologies. Artificial intelligence (#AI) has shown remarkable abilities to reason, problem solve, and control machines—but could tiny models of brain tissue grown in the lab do the same? Led by #BaskinEngineering Assistant Professor of Biomolecular Engineering Tal Sharf, a team of researchers at the UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute, will explore this question with support from a $1.9 million National Science Foundation (NSF) grant. Their work will create an interactive system to test whether brain organoids can learn from experience, respond to feedback, and solve tasks in real time. “These organoid models provide an unprecedented opportunity to probe the emergence of human cognitive capacity – a property that defines what makes us human,” said Sharf, who is a member of the Braingeneers group. This research could drive new biomedical discoveries and lead to better therapies for disease. Co-investigators include Distinguished Professor of Biomolecular Engineering David Haussler, Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Mircea Teodorescu, and research scientist at the Genomics Institute Mohammed Mostajo-Radji, and Hank Greely, Stanford Law Professor and Director of the Center for Law and the Biosciences. UC Davis electrical and computer engineering Ph.D. student Calum Shelden is the first-author on new research pushing science one step closer to controlling the Casimir force, a powerful quantum mechanical effect that draws small objects together. The published research demonstrates how 3D nanostructures can influence and control the Casimir force outside of a liquid environment. I had the opportunity to speak at the SimOps Workshop in Los Gatos, a gathering of hardware engineers, simulation experts, high performance computing practitioners who are shaping the future of simulation operations. 💡 One clear takeaway: engineers now want to do much more with their simulation data. What used to end at verification is evolving into continuous optimization and insight generation. This shift is creating new best practices in data preparation, automation, and analytics, and the SimOps community will continue to define these along with the KPIs that measure real progress. Grateful to everyone who contributed their perspectives and energy. The discussions and feedback reaffirmed that SimOps isn’t just a framework.
