Bichromatic Littoral Temperature Observer (BaLTO)

My work on the project consisted of designing and developing the flight software and some ground software tools. The flight software consisted of software to control the various hardware devices (heaters, cryocooler, cameras), software to monitor the health and safety of the system and report and shut down off-nominal conditions, software to monitor areas of interests to control when the cameras should take pictures.

This project was developed for NASA Glenn as part of the NASA SCaN program. This project studied the ability of near-earth satellites to automatically schedule and transmit data to the ground. My part of the project was to write the real-time flight software and to write a more intelligent ground scheduler. The flight software faked gathering and storing data. When a threshold was reached, the software requested a data-transfer time with the ground software. When the time came, the flight…

My part of the project was to write the real-time flight software and to write a more intelligent ground scheduler. The flight software faked gathering and storing data. When a threshold was reached, the software requested a data-transfer time with the ground software. When the time came, the flight software faked transmitting the data. The intelligent ground scheduler used several different aspects of the communication request to schedule what it considered the best link (a rule-based AI). It did this based on the priority of the request, the duration required to transmit the most data, the links that were available, the links that were the fastest, scheduling conflicts with other satellites, etc. It was even able to re-schedule based on new information.

This 2-rack system was developed over several years for NASA Glenn. The system was designed to study burning fluids and solids in different environments in micro-gravity. My work on the project varied, starting by working on the Digital Control Module, which was a plug-and-play module for different cameras and sensors that were put around the burn chamber. Another part of my work was on controlling the filling of the burn chamber with different gasses as well as controlling venting of the…

This project was developed for NASA Glenn, for the NASA SCaN program. This program studies space communications. The team developed a system for the International Space Station that provided 3 software radios to study communication methods. My parts of the project were varied, developing the Health and Safety software to monitor the system and detect failures, developing the Spacewire interface to reading and storing data from the radios, developing a scripting language and C++ interface…
