Jeff Chase reposted thisJeff Chase reposted thisHotpatching for Windows Server 2025 on-prem, via Azure Arc, will be FREE going forward! 💡 When hotpatching was released via Arc for non-Azure Edition Server 2025 systems, it was a features teams liked in theory but had to weigh against a per-server monthly cost. Now if you're running Windows Server 2025 Standard or Datacenter on-prem or in another cloud, connect it to Azure Arc, enable VBS, and you can use hotpatching without the extra service charge. - Fewer reboot windows (see chart below) - Faster security rollout - Modern server patch orchestration - Hybrid visibility through Azure Arc You still have baseline months where a reboot is required, but the monthly hotpatch cycle makes routine security updates a lot less disruptive which is a huge impact to operational cycles and hands-on validation time for sys admins. The issue fires at 2:47 AM, your packet capture wasn't running, and by the time you're back at the keyboard the evidence is gone. Continuous Packet Capture solves exactly that. It runs a ring buffer on the VM (or VMSS instance), rolling old captures off as new ones come in, so the most recent traffic is always there when you need it. ✅ Can run up to 7 days continuously ✅ Up to 10,000 files at 4 GB each ✅ 5-tuple filtering to capture what you need ✅ Up to 10,000 parallel sessions per region per subscription ✅ Works on VMs and Virtual Machine Scale Sets I've had customers ask for this in the past. Jeff Chase reacted on thisJeff Chase reacted on thisYou're entitled to your own opinions, not your own maths. The hyperscalers have spent a trillion dollars to make $80 billion on AI. Anthropic and OpenAI are not worth $1 trillion each. Revenue growth of Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Oracle, Anthropic and OpenAI would need to increase betwen 50,000 and 100,000x faster than current trajectories in order to just break even with data centre build out cost by 2030. For them to turn a *profit* on AI they would need to generate more than $2 trillion and as much as $5 trillion a year. These are already some of the most profitable firms in the world (not OpenAI and Anthropic, those are pure play grifters). You're telling me that Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Meta will manage - in three years - to essentially create additional versions of their most profitable tech businesses, from thin air and amid a saturated market? Do we think there are currently millions of businesses who never pay for software or SaaS or tech tools who are - again, within three years - suddenly going to realise they simply *must* pay hundreds of millions a year for AI? Where are the investors? This needs to be new money - where are all the funds who have sat on their hands throughout 18 years of post-GFC bull markets who will all simultaneously twig they need to invest hundreds of billions in AI? Meanwhile, while hyperscaler revenues are forecast in grow 15 percent annually this decade, capex is due to grow 20 percent a year. And with OpenAI and Anthropic (companies that this year will burn through $1.69 for every $1 they generate) set to go public, it is clear to me we are in for a financal collapse. As Joachim Klement puts it in the FT this week: "Viewed through this lens, the IPO of these AI companies is probably nothing more than a major transfer of investment risk from the current owners to retail investors, pension funds and others who are willing to buy the hype." I do manual malware analysis, something that has been automated longer than I've been alive. If you're scared, you're scared. But please don't frame it as career advice. I didn't drop everything to go chase Big Data, I didn't drop everything to go chase Web3, nor will I be dropping everything to go chase AI. I'll adapt when I actually need to adapt, not when someone who's rebranded their entire identity for the 5th time this decade tells me I need to. Thanks but no thanks.

Jeff Chase liked thisJeff Chase liked thisWhy Destroy Farmland for Solar Panels When Empty Parking Lots Already Cover Our Cities? They tell us solar energy is the future and maybe it is. But why should fertile farmland, the same land that feeds families and grows crops for generations, disappear under endless rows of panels when millions of parking spaces sit baking under the sun every single day? Imagine driving into a shopping center and parking under solar roofs that give shade in summer, protect cars from rain, and create clean energy at the same time. No extra land destroyed. No farms sacrificed. Just smarter use of space we already have. Fields are more than empty land. They grow food, support farmers, protect wildlife, and carry family histories stretching back decades. Once farmland is covered, it rarely comes back the same. Meanwhile, giant parking lots already cover huge areas of cities with nothing but hot concrete. This idea isn’t about being against solar power. It’s about using common sense. We need renewable energy, but we also need food, nature, and open land. The smartest solutions should do both. Cover the places already built by humans before replacing the land that feeds humans. The future shouldn’t force us to choose between green energy and green fields when we can have both.

Jeff Chase liked thisAmerica has approximately 800 million parking spaces and until recently every single one of them was a flat expanse of heat absorbing asphalt contributing nothing beyond somewhere to leave a car. Solar canopies change that calculation entirely by covering the unused vertical space above parked vehicles with photovoltaic panels that generate clean electricity while simultaneously shading cars, reducing surface temperatures, and cutting the urban heat island effect that makes cities measurably hotter than surrounding areas. The parking lot stops being dead infrastructure and starts being a distributed power plant that requires no additional land, no habitat disruption, and no rezoning. The scale of what this represents across the full American parking inventory is one of the largest untapped renewable energy opportunities sitting in plain sight on already developed land. Shopping centers, airports, stadiums, office parks, and hospitals are all generating significant portions of their own electricity from canopies above spaces that previously contributed only heat and runoff to their surroundings. Solar energy has always faced the argument that it requires too much land. America just remembered it already paved enough of it.

Datacenter migration
- Present
Design/implement a new datacenter infrastructure. This design will include Microsoft Hyper Converged Infrastructure to replace aging monolithic virtualization/storage architecture. This includes leveraging latest technology and features associated with HCI including RDMA, 100Gb networking, commodity server and storage hardware. This design also will create a hybrid cloud that ties our on premise Private Cloud to Microsoft Azures Public Cloud.

Upgrade our NetApp infrastructure to Clustered Ontap
Migrate our existing infrastructure in multiple sites to Clustered Data Ontap, implement our new FAS8040, and re-architecting our new backup infrastructure to take advantage of Clustered Ontap.

Xendesktop 7.1 Pilot
Have created a Pilot installation of Xendesktop 7.1. We are in the process of rolling a VDI build to 10 users that represent a cross section of our environment. Hope to have ~ 800 multi site users on this system by this time next year.
Hypervisor is vSphere 5.1, VDI OS is Windows 7 x64, leveraging Citrix MCS and PvD for desktop catalogs. -

Adding additional performance and capacity to our central datacenter in the form of a NetApp FAS 6250 filer. Once again leveraging SnapMirror and VMware Storage vMotion for the transfer and sync of data. Going to exclusively leverage FAS 3250 for VDI and Backups.
