Javier Frank posted thisIt does not take super-human intelligence to leave us in the dark about the technology we depend on. We are the last generation that will be able to completely understand how the technology we use every day works. We are on the brink of a different type of singularity, not necessarily of super-intelligence, but of our inability to understand how critical systems work. We have generated code and designed silicon with software for decades, but we have always been able to understand how that worked because it followed our mental models. All it takes is for architectures and design patterns tailored to LLMs, but alien to humans, to emerge and we will stop being able to parse how hardware and software works. At some point agents will generate code for silicon that we don't know how to code for because it was not designed for humans to program. There is no pun.

The further someone's cultural distance from the US, the less correlated GPT responses are to their cultural values. I've heard pitches from AI companies suggesting that AI moderation/analysis is a good cost cutting option to make research in "non-priority" markets feasible. But looking at this, there's some real risks that this would miss important local insights and flattening out international insights. The world is much bigger and more diverse than we think, and over-relying on cognitive tools designed in the US could end up making it feel a lot smaller. More thoughts to follow...

Not to mention AI now is unsustainably artificially cheaper than is actually costing us as as a planet and society. I reaaaly do hope there is a pot of gold at the end of this bubble that negates this climate footprint and avoids a generational savings wipeout. I really, really do.

You are spot-on. I think lack of curiosity is what will do it.
For all the amazement about Transformers and its agentic applications, we do know the principles behind them and it is a matter of time for us develop the science around their success (not going to reiterate here the epistemic comparison between Gen AI and the Steam Engine as it relates to basic science). It is relatively simple stuff.
What will drive the incurious tendency you are worried about is money. There will be little qualms to widely adopt something we don't understand, as in we won't be able to but reverse-engineer, if it is better than the human-conceived alternatives. And no, the code that Claude spits out still and for a while will continue to follow human-conceived patterns because that's what it is trained on.
The situation we will find ourselves in is _similar_ to the AGI-maximalists wet dream of a super-intelligence singularity, only it does not require AGI or super intelligence to emerge but just our willingness to tolerate not caring about the how.

This story also made me think about the point that Anil Dash makes in his latest blog entry: about the value that programmers have provided to LLM companies, as their IP was used for training models without consent or even regard to the open-source licenses these were shared under.
"Coders recognize that their work has been used to train AI tools without consent or compensation as well — and that their management is just as eager to displace them with AI tools, too."

As of today, when models still rely on robust training sets for the specific domain they produce content for, the reliance on programmers churning out code publicly remains a long-term limitation. This will become more dire as barriers are stood up between code written for newer languages -or even versions of current languages- and LLM crawlers.

Javier Frank reacted on thisJavier Frank reacted on thisBAU Killer: From 40% BAU to AI-Native Investigations As a CTO, I’ve written a lot about AI evolution in engineering teams. This one hits closer to home. At Eron, ~40% of our development capacity was going to “business as usual” (BAU) requests. When we looked deeper, most of it wasn’t building or fixing: it was investigation. Cashouts not completed. Payments not released. Merchant balances that didn’t reconcile. In a system processing millions of transactions, that investigation layer is expensive and cognitively heavy. So we formed a very small squad: myself, a strong (and very AI-friendly) Product lead, and our Head of AI. The objective was as simple as it was ambitious: dramatically compress investigation time. We built our own internal marketplace on top of Claude Code, with domain-specific plugins for cashin, cashout, merchant balances, and other critical flows. That foundation mattered, but the real leap came when we wired MCPs into our most valuable data sources. We gave the model structured access to New Relic (logs and custom events), Redshift (our warehouse), and a vector database enriched with deep internal knowledge like our cashout reprocessing architecture. The plugins added domain logic and the MCPs gave it real visibility into production. Together, they turned it into a true investigative layer on top of our operational stack. The first time I ran a real investigation through it and saw logs, data, architecture context, and historical knowledge come together in a structured narrative within minutes, the direction was obvious. Once AI has structured context and direct system access, it stops being a chatbot and starts becoming a new interface to your company’s operational brain. The early results have already created internal waves. Other teams quickly asked how to plug their domains into the marketplace. The next step is releasing this tool for 10 early adopters ranging from Tech Leads and Devs to POs and TAMs. We’ll gather structured feedback, refine plugins, strengthen guardrails, and then expand. If AI is going to materially change engineering, it won’t be only through better code generation; it will also come from reducing the cognitive load of complex systems. Building this made that very real for me.

It's hard to say goodbye to a company where I felt so comfortable even while facing so many hard challenges. But that's the way the market is now, and all that's left is to wish Sabre the greatest success! Here's to you all and to what's to come. Positivity and resilience are the key!
