The real anatomy of performance anxiety Let’s consolidate the model. Performance anxiety isn’t random. It has three specific components. 1. Evaluation Someone is watching, judging, ranking, or remembering. 2. Identity contingency The outcome feels tied to who you are. 3. Nervous system activation Your body prepares for perceived threat. All three together produce anxiety. Remove any one of them and intensity drops. Remove identity contingency, and the system stabilizes even when evaluation remains. That’s why practice feels easier. The skills are the same. What’s different is exposure. Here’s the lever most people miss: You don’t need to eliminate nerves. You need to remove identity from the equation. Workplace exclusion doesn’t just hurt feelings, it quietly destroys team building. Research from Harvard Business Review, MIT Sloan, and Gallup shows that even small exclusions (a missed meeting invite, a skipped email, decisions made in side conversations) can dismantle a team’s core foundations: 🔹 Trust drops — Exclusion activates the same neural pathways as physical pain. 🔹 Communication shuts down — People stop sharing ideas when they feel left out. 🔹 Psychological safety disappears — Teams take fewer risks and innovate less. 🔹 Engagement declines — Excluded employees mentally check out and eventually leave. You can’t build strong teams on top of weak inclusion. Team building doesn’t start with retreats or activities, it starts with everyday behaviors like: • Who gets invited • Who gets heard • Who gets credit • Who gets opportunities Inclusion isn’t a “nice-to-have.” It’s the foundation of high performance. I returned home from APA Labs’ Inside the Lab event late on Halloween night, and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. 🎃🧠 A few reflections that have stayed with me: • I’m thrilled that the American Psychological Association is leaning further into this space. Too often, digital mental health products are built by team who lack scientific or clinical expertise. To improve quality and safety, we need organizations like APA to both take a stand and grab a seat at the table. • APA Labs further discussed the digital badge system they launched this summer. The goal is to help users and clinicians identify programs grounded in psychological science. This has the potential to be a game-changer for transparency, safety, and trust in the digital mental health ecosystem. • The event was small and intimate—perfect for strengthening existing connections and building new ones. I’m particularly excited about continuing conversations and potential collaborations with colleagues like Aubrey Shick, David Cooper, PsyD, Sarah Linke, PhD, MPH, Shiri Sharvit, PhD, Danish M., Hill Abrahams, and, of course, Acacia Parks PhD, MBA, RAC • The inaugural Inside the Lab event came together quickly but was flawlessly executed—interactive, energizing, and deeply meaningful. I can’t wait to see what next year's meeting brings!
