For a long time, instructional design has been taught as if it’s something you can learn mostly on your own. Watch some videos. Download some templates. Build a thing. Move on. But that’s not how instructional design actually works in the real world. The work itself is collaborative. It’s full of tradeoffs, constraints, competing priorities, and imperfect information. Instructional designers spend their days talking through decisions, pressure-testing ideas, negotiating scope, and refining judgment alongside other people. And that’s a problem when learning experiences focus almost entirely on content consumption. Because while content can explain concepts, it doesn’t build judgment. Templates can provide structure, but they don’t teach decision-making. And self-paced lessons rarely capture the nuance of real-world instructional design work. The most meaningful learning happens somewhere else. It happens through conversation. Through working through messy problems together. Through seeing how different people approach the same challenge in completely different ways. That’s where designers learn how to think, not just produce. So we’ve been asking ourselves a simple question: If we were designing the best possible way to learn instructional design today, what would it actually look like? The answer has become increasingly clear. It would be live. It would be facilitated. It would be hands-on. And it would be centered around people learning together. Not because that’s easier...it isn’t. And not because it scales better...it doesn’t. But because that’s how real skills are built, and how instructional designers develop the confidence and judgment needed to do the work well. Next week, we’ll be sharing something new that’s been taking shape behind the scenes. For now, just know this: we’re choosing connection over content. We’re choosing depth over scale. And we’re choosing to design learning the same way instructional design actually happens...collaboratively, imperfectly, and with real people in the room.
