Charles Phillips shared thisWill AI kill software application companies? The risk is asymmetrical. Our "AI's Impact on Software as a Service" report and can be downloaded here: https://lnkd.in/ea_-gkdA It's a pyramid. Simpler applications with small code bases e.g. front-end portals and dashboards, project management tools, and apps for niche verticals are at risk from AI or new competition. Applications that must be accurate, must scale, and must not fail — the M-3s — are protected by their complexity, critical data, high switching costs. The report describes the attributes to distinguish between the two. M-3 vendors will layer agents inside their walled gardens, leverage access to important, proprietary data, offer alternative natural language interfaces, and reduce friction in manual steps in long running processes. In other words their applications will get better with AI. They will offer conventiently deployable inference inside their walls. CEOs and CIOs are focused on exploiting AI and unstructured data to create value from new use cases only recently possible with AI. There is less interest in replacing routine applications with internal code that will quickly turn to tech debt with a long support tail. Not as easy as it sounds: OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic are all running Workday for HR. Specialization versus vertical integration. The report also frames how software developers are evolving software engineers to assemble applications faster. The development life cycle has been increasingly automated for years with continuous integration, code libraries, infrastructure as code, containers and other innovations. Coding agents are the next natural step. Yet open jobs recs in tech companies for software engineers is up is up 72% from the low in 2023.

Charles Phillips posted thisMy old friend R "Ray" Wang has a unique talent in seeing tech trends early. He recently published a view on "AI-exponential" services firms - companies with unique skill sets and vision to transform AI into real world use cases. Nothing happens until someone does the last mile. Good to see Qubika (Rec portco) on this highly curated list. We're at the nexus of another exciting new wave.. the thing that keeps us all fixated on this industry. Always creates next generation winners that replace a few of the last. Let the games begin.

Charles Phillips shared thisThe U.S. Air Force Academy broke ground yesterday on a memorial to the Tuskegee Airmen with a replica of the P-51 Mustang they flew in 15,000 sorties and were awarded 850 Medals. Lt. Col. James Harvey, a 100-year-old Tuskegee pilot won the inaugural Top Gun fighter pilot competition in 1949. He went on to win distinguished medals for combat in Korea. Happy to support this memorial along with the Boeing company. The catalyst for a separate training site for Black pilots stemmed from a lawsuit againt the Dept of War brought by a Howard University student named Yancey Williams who simply wanted to fly and eventually he did. But only one color on this day, Air Force Blue.. https://lnkd.in/eB-FBQ3w

Charles Phillips reposted thisFive years ago, we created RECOGNIZE to invest in and catalyze the next generation of Digital Services businesses. Our goal was to help visionary founders and management teams build specialized services businesses that could translate innovative new technologies into powerful use-cases for enterprise customers. Today that journey continues with our announcement of the closing of Recognize Partners Fund II at over $1.7 billion. A lot has transpired to make this possible. A highly skilled team of 30 plus professionals at Recognize invested in 14 attractive businesses over the last 5 years (and completed 20 add-on acquisitions). These companies are led by an extremely talented group of founders and executives, who along with the Recognize team, work every day seeking to build highly differentiated and strategic assets. We’ve now fully exited two investments to strategic buyers - our sale of AST to IBM and Torc to Randstad. We also recently sold a minority stake in 2X to Insight Partners. We’re fortunate to have a great group of sophisticated investors in our first fund who, along with several new investors, allowed us to raise our second fund in just five months from launch. A HUGE THANK YOU to the Recognize team, our talented management teams and our investor group for making this all possible. Excited for the next phase of our journey together!Charles Phillips reposted thisWe’re excited to share that RECOGNIZE has closed its second fund, Recognize Partners II, with over $1.7 billion in total capital commitments. We are deeply grateful for the ongoing support and trust of our valued existing investors and are also thrilled to have established new partnerships with a select group of additional high quality limited partners. Fund II marks another significant milestone on our journey as we strive to be the leading investor and business builder of next-generation Digital Services companies. We continue to believe that our space represents one of the most compelling areas for investment, and that Recognize – as a focused, specialist investor-operator platform – has a differentiated edge in supporting our talented management teams as they build disruptive and innovative companies that seek to deliver transformative outcomes for the enterprise leveraging AI, software, and digital platforms. 📰 Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gS9WKqkQ #Recognize #PrivateEquity #Investing #Innovation #GrowthCapital #ValueCreation #DigitalServices #ProductizingServices #InferenceLayer #TechEntrepreneurs #BusinessOutcomes

Charles Phillips liked thisCharles Phillips liked thisZillow is trying to replace the MLS by taking listings and data feeds outside of the MLS. When brokerages give direct data feeds to ZIllow (outside of the MLS), Zillow owns the agents’ and brokerages’ data forever and can sell their data forever. See Zillow’s Terms of Use. Unlike Zillow, Compass International Holdings has committed to have all publicly marketed listings in the MLS for cooperation across all brokerages. I Support Mandatory Submission For the MLS to be Source of Truth for Comps. I Support Mandatory Cooperation of Publicly Marketed Listings. I Don’t Support Mandatory Marketing To Ai Companies and 3rd Party Sites like Zillow Outside of the MLS.

Charles Phillips liked thisCharles Phillips liked thisI tend to stay away from the public markets, but sometimes it does help to tell a compelling story. A company's market capitalization is a corollary for how "the market" views a company's future growth prospects relative to its current financial position. I've been talking about the shifting power dynamics between portals and brokerages and agents. I don't own stock in any public real estate companies, but every now and then I check stock performance as a data point. And with all the noise between Compass and Zillow, this one stood out. Over the past 16 months, Zillow has gone from a market cap 5.5x larger than Compass to just 1.3x today. That's quite a change -- and a reflection of those changing power dynamics. Interesting times for sure.

In his conversation with Techstrong Group, Rajeev Butani, our Chairman & CEO, shares a clear perspective: the future isn’t about autonomous AI, but augmented agents with humans at the core. As enterprises move beyond pilots, real value will come from embedding AI into workflows, elevating human judgment, and aligning execution with measurable outcomes. Charles Phillips reacted on thisCharles Phillips reacted on thisIt’s always a wild week when you hang out with R "Ray" Wang and his merry band from Constellation Research, Inc. We had the inaugural #FuturesForum bringing together Board directors and CEOs followed by the #AIForum. Several intense conversations but here are some of the highlights: The CEO needs to become the chief AI officer and drive coordination across the C suite in terms of the strategy, roadmap and execution. AI infrastructure build out remains paramount - the risk is not demand - it’s power. There is a high possibility of GPU chips sitting idle waiting for power. There is no SaaS-acopalypse - SaaS companies can and will need to reinvent themselves every three years. AI cannot replace rules based deterministic systems of record like ERP CRM. “Don’t put the referee in the player” IT services firms are restructuring themselves. Need to keep hiring entry level associates but they will do different jobs. IT services is at the confluence of Operations, Tech and business domain. I got unwittingly convinced to speak on the panel of “Bringing Space Technologies Down to Earth” because of my role on the Board of Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian and the panel on “AI Ownership and Accountability” - just because… So good to see several old and new friends and great to be in Menlo Park. Thrilled to be featured in Preqin Preqin’s latest piece by Shaun Beaney on the evolving secondaries market. https://shorturl.at/0PXRj At Kline Hill Partners, we’ve deliberately built our platform around smaller deals—typically under $20M for limited partnership portfolios—because that’s where the real opportunity lies for the vast majority of LPs who don’t sit on nine-figure portfolios. Liquidity solutions shouldn’t be reserved for the largest institutions only. For continuation funds, we lead transactions in single asset deals that are typically smaller than $250m which is also much smaller than where most of the industry focuses. We closed over 150 of these deals last year while the broader market continues its explosive growth (now north of $220bn annually, yet still just ~2% turnover of private equity assets). The conversation with Shaun Beaney covers why smaller secondaries and GP-led continuation vehicles are shaping the future of the industry, our expansion into Europe, and the structural tailwinds that are only accelerating (eg in recent years over half of all LP sellers are first time - groups that are sure to repeat this process in the future). Would welcome your thoughts—especially if you’re an LP or GP navigating liquidity in today’s environment. #privateequity #GPled #Secondaries #AlternativeInvestments

“For years we incorrectly framed some of these categories as “ESG” or “climate risk.” That was wrong. Instead of investing in Environmental, Social, and Governance, we should be investing in Global Competition and Innovation (GCI). Meeting those other goals is a pyrrhic victory if we don’t maintain our ability to operate in a contested and unstable world where rivals like China are outpacing us in critical domains.”

I first met Cameron McCord over 3 years ago and knew right away that I wanted to partner with him. Cameron had spent 484 days underwater on a submarine, running life-or-death missions on 1970s technology. That experience became the insight behind Nominal. At the frontier of Reindustrialization, some of the world's most advanced hardware is still being managed with Excel and PowerPoint. Cameron, Bryce Strauss, and Jason Hoch are building Nominal to modernize how teams build in the physical world. General Catalyst had the privilege of leading their Series A, and we're doubling down as they announce an $80M acceleration round at a $1B valuation. Global Resilience demands hardware at speed and at relevance. Nominal makes that possible for us and our allies. Hear more about how Nominal came to be and the critical need they are addressing. Today’s financing environment is affecting both emerging AI and technology companies as well as large incumbents. As I shared recently with IT Brew, not all debt is created equal. For mature companies with strong balance sheets, the rise in borrowing isn’t alarming, as they have the scale and stability to manage it. But for younger AI companies, where debt often represents a much larger share of capitalization, the stakes are very different. At earlier stages, it’s important to be thoughtful and prepared. Raise what you can, when you can, and make sure you have the cushion to navigate whatever comes next. Thanks again to Caroline Nihill for including me! https://lnkd.in/gNyyktpx

VC Aha! #5: Fund or DIY? You’ve got $1M–$5M for venture with two real paths: * DIY — your checks, your network, your pace * Fund — pro managers, access, discipline Why a fund can win (for $1–$5M LPs): * Access to oversubscribed rounds + co-invest rights * Selection edge: see thousands, back ~15–25, defend pro-rata * Follow-on discipline: reserves and pacing > emotional bridges * Leverage: sourcing, diligence, GTM help, later-stage syndication * Optionality: secondaries, continuation vehicles when portfolios mature Real costs: * Fees & carry, blind-pool risk & style drift. When you commit, you’re buying into a blind pool: the manager hasn’t yet chosen the companies. You’re betting on their judgment, not a known portfolio. That risk compounds if managers drift from their strategy — e.g., a seed fund suddenly chasing growth, or a “tech-first” fund chasing consumer brands. * J-curve/illiquidity. Early in a fund’s life, your capital is called, fees are paid, and portfolio companies are still burning cash. On paper, the net asset value sometimes dips before it rises — that’s the J-curve. If you need liquidity in the short or medium term, venture isn’t the right pocket. * Admin (DIY): SPVs, tax, custody overhead A fast decision framework: * Edge: Do you have a repeatable edge + ~10 hrs/week? Have you generated 3x+ returns on 5+ deals in a specific sector? * Deal flow: Can you see and win 500+ credible deals/year? * Risk: Prefer concentrated bets or diversified, programmatic exposure? * Preference: Hands-on picking or structured portfolio construction? Default play for many investors in this range: * Hybrid: back 2–3 managers you trust (vintage diversification), keep 30–50% for directs/co-invests where you have conviction. The Aha: A fund isn’t “better.” It’s structured optionality at scale. -- Part of Stu's VC Aha! series #1: Drawdown (LP view) #2: 50 pitches and 1 yes (founder view) #3: Access (LP view) #4: Cap table (founders view) #5: Fund or DIY? Congratulations to all of the winners, and I think James Anderson summed up the decade-long evolution for city innovation much better than I could! "A decade ago, many ideas began with technology or pilots. Today, the strongest begin with people and proof. These teams didn’t start with shiny solutions -- they started with diagnosis. They used data to understand root causes, engaged residents to understand challenges from the street level, tested and refined ideas in the open, and let outcomes — not departmental boundaries — shape who needed to be at the table and how the work got done." More of this - no more Shiny Object Syndrome (SOS!), begin with people and proof and a diagnosed problem. Engage and test transparently, then keep going!

Working with NRF to pursue our patent strategy is an important step in recognizing that proprietary AI systems and workflows are becoming a new form of intellectual property for modern firms. Great to partner with George, John McBride, and the team at Norton Rose Fulbright as we work at the frontier of how AI can transform investment decision-making in venture capital. At Decasonic, we believe the next generation of companies will reinvent with AI workflows and systems how organizations operate, how leaders make decisions, and how teams collaborate with intelligent systems. In going through this streamlined process, it's clear to me that many more startups should clarify their IP strategy. Our internally developed AI platform, RLEN, reflects that philosophy. We are building AI not to automate tasks and flourish outcomes, in collaborative ways for human and AI teammates. This enables our investors to test ideas, explore alternative perspectives, and reach deeper insights faster when navigating uncertainty. More broadly, we are seeing trailblazing work across industries and cities as leaders experiment with how AI can reshape communities, companies, and countries. Leadership with AI forever transforms. We are still in the early innings. Appreciate the partnership and collaboration from the Norton Rose Fulbright team as we continue inventing and innovating. Special shoutout to my colleague Abdul Al Ali who's listed as a co-inventor.

Everyone says they have a tokenization strategy. Very few can actually execute it. This Thursday, Alan Konevsky joins a panel at American Banker On-Chain to talk about the real execution crisis facing financial institutions. As tokenization moves from pilot → production, the challenge isn’t regulation. It’s whether TradFi can operate in 24/7 programmable markets. Topics: • Why “tokenization strategy” isn’t a business model • What has to break inside financial institutions to ship on-chain products • Why digital asset divisions stall execution • What governance looks like in atomic settlement systems The next three years will decide who actually builds onchain market share.
