Carla Grant Pickens (she/her) reposted thisCarla Grant Pickens (she/her) reposted thisI am saddened to share that Lou Gerstner, IBM’s Chairman and CEO from 1993 to 2002, passed away yesterday. Lou arrived at IBM at a moment when the company’s future was genuinely uncertain. The industry was changing rapidly, our business was under pressure, and there was serious debate about whether IBM should even remain whole. His leadership during that period reshaped the company. Not by looking backward, but by focusing relentlessly on what our clients would need next.

Carla Grant Pickens (she/her) shared thisAfter 25 years at IBM Corporation, I am announcing my retirement! I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunities I've had, the great people I've worked with, and the community we built together. Many people across my 35-year career have touched my life and my career in many ways. I cannot begin to express my immense gratitude. I will enjoy many fond memories, and I am thankful for that. In the meantime, I am going to focus on myself, my family, and re-discovering the things I enjoy most. Thank you to those who have supported me along the way: God, my husband, my sons, family, friends, and great work colleagues. I'm looking forward to discovering my next chapter. Stay tuned! I wish you all the best!

Carla Grant Pickens (she/her) shared thisAs I reflect on Mother’s Day, my mother would have been 95 years old on May 12th. The wisdom she shared with me as a young girl, I believe hasn’t changed for many decades. She said, “every mother wants her children to live a life better than their own.” Her expectations: 1. Get an education & higher education, 2. Good grades & behaviors can create opportunity, 3. Work hard & take care of yourself (economically), 4. Be happy, 5. Choose wisely on who you surround yourself with, and 6. Service to others. I was able to achieve all these lessons. She would be so proud that her grandson has a headstart achieving all these steps for me and her. Louis graduated Saturday from Xavier University of Louisiana (HBCU). He will start his job at Ernst & Young Global Consulting Services as a Strategy & Finance Consultant, while he continues his studies for the CPA exam. I told him lifelong experience and skills are equally as important as education. Louis is so much like his grandmother…kind, thoughtful, focused, smart, and an impeccable dresser 😊. This can not be done alone. It has taken a village of family, friends, and colleagues. This village poured into Louis sharing time and opportunity with his commitment to follow through. I want to thank, Steven Oesterle, Erika McConduit, Deirdre Angus, Xavier University of Louisiana Professors & Deans, Darrell Holloman II, LaNeise Boyd, MPA, Karyn Twaronite, Raphael (Rafi) Ezry, Kyu Rhee, MD, MPP, Leslie Peeler, Deloitte student case study and mentors program, KPMG US Deans & Students retreat, Centene Corporation internship program, and IBM Accelerate Consulting skills badge program. Corporate & Non-Profit investments in our current and future workforce is working!!! (DE&I, ESG, CSR). We have to continue to create inclusive opportunities for future generations to prosper. The last time I checked, “inclusion is everybody.” As my friend, Drew Valentine says often, “reach back, pull forward.” This is my lived American dream.

Carla Grant Pickens (she/her) reacted on thisCarla Grant Pickens (she/her) reacted on thisExcited to share that I’ve started a new role with Deloitte in their HR M&A Consulting practice. After 30 years of combined PwC and IBM experience — including many years leading and supporting HR M&A work from the corporate side — it’s incredibly energizing to now be on the other side of the table helping clients navigate the people side of transactions, transformations, and integrations. Throughout my career at IBM, I had the opportunity to work on complex global deals, large-scale transformations, and the creation of entirely new organizations. Those experiences taught me that successful M&A isn’t just about systems and processes — it’s about people, culture, leadership, and helping organizations move forward together. I’m grateful for everything that brought me to this point and excited for this next chapter with such a talented team at Deloitte. Looking forward to reconnecting with many of you in this new role!

Carla Grant Pickens (she/her) reacted on thisCarla Grant Pickens (she/her) reacted on thisI took my mom to the Washington Mystics game for Mother’s Day and it was a reminder that supporting women’s sports is bigger than one game. Women supporting women matters. Visibility matters. Investment matters. And yes… putting butts in seats matters. Wonderful to see the arena full — fans showing up, families cheering, and young girls watching women compete on a big stage. That energy matters. If we want women athletes to have the recognition, sponsorships, media coverage, and opportunities they deserve, we have to show up. Buy the tickets. Bring your daughters. Bring your moms. Bring your friends. There’s something powerful about watching women compete at the highest level while sitting beside the woman who taught you strength in the first place. Happy Mother’s Day to all the women cheering from the sidelines and leading on the court. #gendermultipliereffect #WNBA #MothersDay #WomenSupportingWomen #SupportWomensSports #InvestInWomen #Leadership #Community

Carla Grant Pickens (she/her) reacted on thisCarla Grant Pickens (she/her) reacted on thisI'm grateful for a season of learning and being stretched. Over the last month, I've gotten to: - digest the CHRO's guide for leading org transformations in the age of AI from Institute for Leadership & Work - create a talent strategy for IBM Infrastructure, building on the lessons learned shadowing one of IBM's best leaders Oluwafemi Ogunsola - discuss the challenges and shape the future of employee listening with my colleagues in IT Survey Group - hear from thought leaders across employee listening, people analytics, and talent at the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) conference - build a pilot to equip early career HR talent with the skills they need to thrive as AI reshapes what entry-level roles look like All the above reinforce the importance of HR creating business value. How we redesign work, equip employees with the right skills, and enhance the employee experience will determine which organizations realize the benefits of enterprise AI.

I keep coming back to this thought after reading recent research and talking with Contingent Workforce leaders across the industry. Contingent Workforce leaders are some of the most capable leaders in an organization, and we rarely talk about it that way. There is no formal degree path into this role. No clean playbook. Most people who lead contingent workforce programs learned by doing after it falls in their lap, by solving hard problems in real time, often with limited tools and high expectations. They build expertise through experience, not theory. At the same time, the role keeps expanding. Today’s contingent workforce leader is managing risk, compliance, classification, suppliers, cost, speed, worker experience, and increasingly complex legislation, all while being expected to move fast and keep the business running. The scrutiny is higher. The stakes are higher. And the margin for error is smaller than ever. What that creates is a uniquely capable leader. These leaders understand how work actually gets done across the organization. They see across labor types and are the only function responsible for the full life cycle of a portion of the workforce. Their perspective is valuable. They know where flexibility matters and where risk lives. They have strong instincts because they have had to develop them. The opportunity right now is not to ask contingent workforce leaders to do more. It is to elevate the work they are already doing. When contingent workforce leadership is treated as operational only, organizations miss the bigger picture. When that same expertise is pulled into workforce planning early, something shifts. Decisions get smarter. The organization moves faster. Volatility feels more manageable because there is a plan, not just a reaction. This is the conversation I want more executives to lean into. Contingent workforce leadership is not about filling gaps when things get tight. It is about designing for reality. It is about building a workforce that can move, adapt, and still deliver to the ever-evolving needs of our customers and when the market shifts again and again. If we recognize and empower Contingent Workforce leaders as strategic business leaders, the value becomes obvious. You do not have to sell the value. You observe it in outcomes. That is how we move beyond point solutions and short-term fixes. That is how we create momentum. And honestly, I think that is how we build an industry movement around what the workforce actually looks like today, not what org charts say it looks like. Yes, I am very passionate about this. If you lead a contingent workforce program, what part of your role do you think is most misunderstood?

I finished a live conversation with Patricia Frost, Chief of People and Places at Seagate Technology at HR Executive #hrtech and I couldn't stop thinking about it. She spent 32 years in the U.S. Army before taking on one of the toughest challenges in corporate leadership: helping 30,000 people redefine how they work in the age of AI. When she said, “My philosophy is leave no one behind,” I expected a leadership cliché. But she meant it literally. She’s making sure every employee, not just a pilot group, has access to GenAI tools. She even gave up headcount to fund software licenses so everyone could learn and experiment together. That’s what real transformation looks like. It’s not adoption. It’s embodiment. It’s a leader saying, “I will not let my people get left behind while the world moves forward.” Patricia also said something that I wont forget. “AI won’t build your culture. AI won’t build trust. That’s on us.” She’s right. The technology isn’t the hard part. The hard part is helping people redefine their roles, rebuild trust, and lead with curiosity instead of fear. If you care about where HR is headed and how leaders can truly prepare their people for what’s next, listen to this conversation. It’s one of the most honest and energizing ones I’ve had all year. When I launched the Radical Innovators podcast one year ago, my goal was to bring HR leaders together in a vulnerable setting, allowing them to speak candidly about leadership. Since March 2025, Randstad Enterprise has helped me welcome CHROs, Chief People Officers, Global Heads of Human Capital, Executive Vice Presidents, and more from Fortune 500s and other well-known organizations from across industries. Together, we’ve talked about these challenges (and opportunities) facing HR leaders today: ⇨ Why empathy is a part of how great leaders create performance, especially in today’s world ⇨ How proactive HR reinvention and AI-driven talent insights create agile, high-impact workforce systems ⇨ How investing early in talent, expanding workforce models, and leading culture change prepares organizations for the future ⇨ Why people strategy must be a business strategy, blending human clarity with AI-powered decision-making ⇨ Having a human-centered approach to HR, using mentorship, internships, and AI to connect talent with purpose and impact ⇨ How mission-driven HR can deliver both people and business outcomes at the board level Radical Innovators has become a community. I am proud to have created a space where leaders can be vulnerable and open up about their sweets and sours (one of my favorite icebreakers), their upbringing, success stories, challenges, and especially the moments that shaped them most. Looking ahead to Year 2, I’m doubling down on what makes Radical Innovators special: ⇨ Vulnerable and authentic conversations with HR leaders who are transforming how we work ⇨ Actionable insights you can apply immediately, no matter where in the organization you stand ⇨ Future-forward perspectives on where talent strategy is heading A huge thank you to every CHRO who has joined me! When I first started IBM’s Digital Credential Program, I made three big mistakes. 🚫 I was talking to the wrong people. 🚫 I wasn’t speaking their language. 🚫 I wasn’t appealing to their emotions. TRUTH: People don’t resist change . . . they resist being changed. Next Wednesday, I’ll be sharing the real story behind IBM’s credential revolution — and what it taught me about launching an innovation. Join Kelly Page, PhD., Eric Shepherd and me for this live session, where I’ll unpack how to: ✅ Turn skeptics into champions ✅ Speak the language of outcomes — not technology ✅ Use emotion and influence to drive lasting change It’s not about badges, platforms or technology. It’s about people. Register now to join the webinar next Wednesday and learn how you can apply these lessons to your own workforce strategy. #DigitalCredentials #LearningInnovation #WorkforceDevelopment #MyInnerGenius #SkillsTransformation #USChamber

Every M&A team talks about critical talent. Almost none can identify it — because critical roles don’t show up in org charts.” Series — Workforce Blind Spots in M&A In every transaction, you’ll hear phrases like: “We need to protect critical talent.” “These people are essential.” “This role is key for Day-1.” But here’s the truth: Most companies cannot distinguish „senior“ from „critical.“ And this is exactly why transitions break. Because critical roles are rarely the ones you expect. What actually makes a role critical in M&A: 1. Invisible workflow ownership People who own the undocumented processes — the ones that collapse when they’re absent. 2. Functional chokepoints Roles where work queues behind one person — regardless of headcount. 3. Integration leverage Roles that enable other teams to stabilize — often mid-level, never in presentations. 4. Knowledge asymmetry People who know the 10% of exceptions that keep the system stable — not the 90% that’s in manuals. 5. Decision friction reducers Individuals who solve problems before they escalate — you only notice them when they’re gone. 6. Cultural anchors People who stabilize emotional tone — especially during uncertainty. 7. System dependencies If one person understands how a legacy system actually works → that person becomes the integration critical path. Here’s the uncomfortable truth: Critical roles are rarely critical because of hierarchy. They’re critical because of dependency. And if you don’t map those dependencies early, you’re not protecting the business — you’re protecting the org chart. #CriticalRoles #WorkforceTransformation #PeopleInMA #HumanCapitalRisk #CarveOut #CarveIn #OrganizationalDesign #ResponsibilityMapping #IntegrationLeadership #DealExecution
