Elevation Publishing Group is now servicing 11 incredible clients, with 5 books launching in the next 8 weeks. The promise I made to myself when AI began shifting the media sales landscape in 2023 was simple: Don’t panic. Pivot. After 25 years in media, publishing, digital marketing, and relationship nurturing, I decided to take everything I’d learned — and the amazing relationships I’ve built along the way — and build something of my own. I re-read the book Relationship Equity by my friend, Richard Walker — a project I helped bring to life through Forbes Books — and it reminded me that relationships are the ultimate currency. So I started my own shop. I bet on me. And I haven’t looked back. This year, I’ve visited 7 countries, sang at Carnegie Hall, launched a thriving business, watched my 1st-born child graduate from college with a 3.9 GPA, and increased my income while getting more sleep, less stress, and more joy. No 9-5 rules. No corporate governances or cultures that never matched mine to adhere to. Just freedom to help my clients and authenticity to create and nurture on my own terms. I’ve even lost people I deeply loved this year — but that pain became fuel for my purpose. Today, I am a free woman. No shackles. No fear. No need for validation. I know who I am. During my tenure, it has been a privilege and a professionally rewarding experience to lead and grow the merchandise function across Buying, Planning, and Drop Ship. I have doubled retail sales, expanded sourcing to introduce more diverse product designs and materials, and achieved a significant increase in the integrated product margin. I am immensely proud of these achievements, which would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our team. One of my proudest achievements has been building and leading a high-performing buying team that not only broke new ground in performance but also introduced more female voices into a traditionally male-dominated space. Together, we shaped a collaborative culture — a team effort that drove results and innovation. I’ve also had the pleasure of working with many long-tenured supplier partners, whose trust and collaboration were key to our mutual success. I’m especially grateful for the people — past and present — who’ve made this journey so meaningful. Your support and collaboration have been invaluable, and I am deeply thankful for it. At Digiday DPS in Miami and the biggest thing Publishers are talking about, bigger than any Core Web Vitals update, is the fall off in traffic due to AI Overviews. It varies by vertical, but many Pubs are seeing up to a 40% cliff with no bottom in sight. 😱

Several years ago, Cult was asked to help Eddie Bauer reclaim its relevance. We recommended a solid, actionable customer engagement and brand revitalization strategy (BTW - it had nothing to do with redesigning their logo, which is a poor substitute for brand reinvention). They smiled, nodded, and then... did nothing with any of our ideas. Eddie Bauer just filed for bankruptcy and announced it is closing all their North American retail stores to become a digital-only brand. I'm not an "I told you so" kind of guy, but this post kinda is. Going digital-only is the business equivalent of saying, "We couldn't figure out how to make people want to visit us, so we're just going to stop inviting them." Physical retail isn't dead. Undifferentiated retail is dead. Retailers that offer nothing you can't get faster and cheaper online are dead. Eddie Bauer's problem was never that they had stores. Their problem was that their stores—and their brand—stopped giving people a compelling reason to care. When you're selling the same fleece jackets as everyone else, at roughly the same price, with roughly the same experience, you become forgettable. And forgettable brands don't survive, no matter how many channels they're on. Their digital focus is code for, "we're out of ideas." Real transformation required them to reimagine what made their customers choose them in the first place. It meant finding authentic ways to deliver that in today's world. Instead, Eddie Bauer chose to shut it all down, go online, and hope the Shopify gods smile upon them. They won't, because the internet is already full of outdoor brands. What it lacks is remarkable ones—brands that understand their customers deeply enough to create experiences worth showing up for, whether that's in a store, online, or anywhere else. Omnichannel doesn't mean "both." It means "wherever your customers want you, done exceptionally well." Eddie Bauer chose "neither." That's a shame.
