Hot take: a less impressive job title can be a better career move. As you head into the New Year and maybe start thinking about pivots or changes, that voice in the back of your head may start to creep up and say: “This role seems interesting… but the title feels like a step back.” Listening to Molly Graham on Lenny Rachitsky Podcast yesterday helped clarify why that instinct can be misleading. She talks about optimizing for learning rate, how quickly you’re expanding what you know and can do, rather than optimizing for status. Titles are inconsistent and often arbitrary. Expectations aren’t. A bigger title usually comes with the assumption that you already have context, pattern recognition, and answers. That can shrink the space you have to ask questions, make mistakes, and actually learn, which is exactly what you should be looking for during a transition. Roles with less “razzle dazzle” on paper often come with more upside than they get credit for: - More room to be curious - More tolerance for mistakes (and learning from them) - More opportunity to grow into, and beyond. the role quickly Some of the strongest people I’ve worked with have done this intentionally. They chose roles with high learning upside, picked up scope fast, and were elevated sooner than if they’d optimized for title from day one. I felt this personally when I pivoted. A title I’d worked hard for almost stopped me from taking a role that ended up accelerating my growth far more than staying “senior” would have. Friendly reminder: your career is long and is shaped more like an arc than a ladder. As the New Year begins and you start thinking about what’s next, it’s worth asking: Does this role optimize for how it looks right now or for how much it will expand what I’m capable of in the future? Choosing learning over ego can quietly pay off in a big way.
