👉 I’ve been seeing a lot of posts lately along the lines of:  “Graphic designers are NOT motion designers, video editors, illustrators, photographers, etc. Employers need to stop asking them to be.” I get where that frustration comes from, but I think this sentiment can come across as rigid. Some of the most rewarding moments in my career have been when I've stepped outside the “graphic designer” box and tried my hand at motion, 3D, video, and roles I hadn’t touched before. These moments expand my skillset and show me new directions my career could take. That said, boundaries matter. Clear communication around workload, timelines, and quality expectations will mean the difference between healthy growth and burnout. To me, saying “I don’t do that, I’m just a graphic designer” misses the nuance. I like to frame it as: “I’d love to explore that, but here’s what I need to make it successful.” Creativity thrives at the edges of our comfort zones, and being trusted with tasks outside of the job description can be a great opportunity. 👈 💞 😎

You don't need Photoshop. (I've used it for 17 years. I'm allowed to say this) Most people think design starts with software. It doesn't. It starts with questions. When I work with a client, I don't open Photoshop first. I ask questions first. Who is your target audience? What's your #1 goal with this design? What should they FEEL when they see it? Without these answers, I'm just guessing. And guessing leads to 5 revision rounds, endless back-and-forth, and a design no one loves. Harry, a client of mine, told me: "Your questions forced me to think harder than I expected. I hadn't considered that level of detail." That's the work. Not picking fonts. Not moving pixels. Thinking and asking questions. Here's what I know after 10,000+ projects: The best designs come from clear direction. The worst come from "just make it look nice." So before you touch any tool: → Know your one message → Collect examples you actually like → Set simple rules for yourself → Pretend you're briefing a designer Now you have creative boundaries. Publishing is often treated as a creative task. In reality, it’s a structural one. When structure is missing, even strong ideas struggle to travel far. Covers, layouts, and formatting matter but only when they’re guided by clarity, consistency, and intent. Authors who create lasting impact don’t start with design. They start by deciding what the book is meant to support and being clear about the role the book plays. Concept sketch → Final vector art ✏️ The real work starts before you ever open a design program. Research. Planning. Sketching. Troubleshooting. That’s how I've been able to define success in my projects. For me, that upfront thinking is much easier to navigate on paper than inside any software. You have to know where you’re going first and foremost. Even if the direction shifts slightly, the essence of the idea should already be there. Take this concept sketch from my RAD Fruit series. The core idea was clear from the start — the attitude, the silhouette, the personality. Even if most of that energy is mostly an idea in my head, putting something down on paper is the first step in making it real. This ended up being one of my most detailed and textured illustrations to date. But that level of experimentation doesn’t just happen. It comes from planning. It comes from understanding the structure before layering in complexity. Once I move into Illustrator, that’s when refinement begins — tightening composition, defining shapes, and making intentional creative decisions that carry the concept through to completion. Software doesn’t create clarity. The exploratory phase does. Hey graphic designers! I love #Adobe workflows (#InDesign, #Illustrator, #AcrobatPro, #adobeloud is amazing), and these preflight tips have legit saved alot of print disasters. No more frantic all-nighters looking for errors and repairing files. #Tip 1: Live Preflight in InDesign. Fire up Window > Output > Preflight from the jump. It spots missing fonts, low-res images, or overset text live, the panel flashes red, and you fix it right there. Total deadline hero. #Tip 2: CMYK from the Start (Quality Over Corners) Work in CMYK mode in Photoshop/Illustrator from the first minute. I once dealt with a company insisting on all-RGB files because PNGs were "easier and cheaper" for them, total nightmare with color shifts on the different presses, not to mention all the extra hours when printing on clear media and building white layers. Use Acrobat's Preflight (Tools > Print Production > Preflight > Analyze and Fix) to convert any RGB stragglers. You're the pro, it's your job to prioritize quality over untrained pushback, always. #Tip 3: PDF/X-1a with Proper BleedPackage in InDesign (File > Package), export as PDF/X-1a with 0.125in+ bleeds, and hit Acrobat's checks for 300dpi and crops. One of the advantages I believe many talented designers have is the ability to think about problems/solutions musically. Yes. Musically. There is so much insight into, rhythm, timing, "colouring" of a design, instrumentation, and more when applying it to design problems and solutions. Do you animate your slides? Here are two innovative ways to use it well: 🎯 1. Use simple builds on simple slides: Simple builds deliver information in comprehensible portions. Viewers will follow each point as you make it, rather than reading and not listening. 🎬 2. Break out critical slides into story builds: Wherever you deliver that big idea, break it into multiple slides that use animation, illustration, and story to walk your viewers through each point like it matters. It’s easier for you to deliver and for them to consume, and they’ll be with you on every step of the journey. Animation done right isn’t distracting—it focuses attention and drives the show.

From Image to Print-Ready Vector Wrap A client recently contacted me needing a flat Adobe Illustrator file recreated from an image for a trailer vinyl wrap. The requirement was very specific. The graphics had to be manually recreated from the image and prepared as a large-format, print-ready Illustrator file sized at 480 × 240 inches for vinyl printing. This type of project requires precision because vehicle wraps must be clean, scalable, and properly structured for production. Every element including logos, wave graphics, and text had to be carefully redrawn to ensure accuracy and print quality. A lot of today’s graphic designers don’t know how to design for print. I don’t mean “I can export a PDF.” I mean understanding ink, paper, bleeds, folds, finishes, binding, and how that beautiful layout is actually going to come off a press without looking like a hot mess. In digital, you can push pixels around and fix things after launch. In print, once it’s on 10,000 brochures or a 20-foot booth graphic, you own that mistake. If you’re designing logos, identities, or campaigns and don’t understand how they translate to print, you’re only doing half the job. The fix isn’t glamorous, but it’s not complicated: learn the basics (CMYK vs RGB, resolution, bleeds, trim, safe area, folds, binding), make friends with a good printer, ask “too many” questions, and mock up real-world scenarios like packaging, signage, brochures, and trade show walls. Treat print specs as guardrails, not buzzkills. Designers who can think from Instagram ad to trade show booth have a serious edge—just like back-end devs who understand front-end. I know print.
