The role play feature is available in the English language library on desktop and mobile web for learners with Enterprise accounts or LinkedIn Premium memberships.

To use the role play feature:

1. Select a scenario from the Homepage, Search, or a course that includes role play practice.
2. Review the details on the scenario setup page to understand where to take the conversation. You can click Edit and adjust the personality of the AI (i.e., more defensive, more agreeable, more professional, etc.).
3. AI will start the conversation. When you’re ready to respond, click the Speak button and talk naturally. You may need to grant LinkedIn Learning access to your device’s microphone. You may also choose to do a text-based role play by clicking on the  icon on the bottom.
4. The feature will automatically detect when you are finished speaking and turn off the microphone. You can also manually turn off the microphone by clicking it. 
5. The role play bot will process what you said and leverage AI to respond accordingly. You may want to turn up your volume to hear its response, or you can read the response transcript below.
6. Continue the back and forth conversation. The microphone will reactivate after the AI responds.
7. When the conversation reaches a natural conclusion, click End session.
8. The personalized results page offers feedback and suggests best practices and LinkedIn Learning videos and courses to help you close skill gaps.

No. Currently, you cannot reference past results, but you can copy and paste the feedback and save the content elsewhere for later reference.

Click the  Like or  Dislike icons next to the text responses or in each section of the results page. Learners may also see pop-up surveys on the Results page.

Admins can turn off access for their organization in admin settings. Select Customize > Learner Features, and turn off AI-powered role play.

Role play scenarios produced by LinkedIn Learning use customized prompts informed by experts, instructional designers, and extensive testing. Role play scenarios created by a learner will reference the evaluation criteria provided by the learner. After the session ends, feedback is generated based on a number of factors. For example, a learner may be evaluated on their clarity of communication, empathy, and ability to achieve the role play scenario’s goals. 

The Results page includes the following: 

• Detailed feedback on the learners strengths and areas of improvement 
• Suggestions for how to potentially respond differently next time
• Course and video recommendations related to the feedback
  

Role play is powered by Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI API Service to develop a contextual understanding of the scenario and uses a finely tuned dialogue prompt to conduct a realistic, appropriate conversation. Microsoft’s Azure AI Speech is used to convert text responses into audible voice responses, and vice versa.

The AI will reference information from the scenario setup page and the live session to inform responses: 

• How the learner navigates the scenario and responds to the AI will shape the AI’s responses. The dialogue is context sensitive and models complex behavior like reluctance or deflecting blame, ensuring realistic conversation flow and emotional depth. 
• Additional details about the role play may influence the speech patterns and tone of the conversation (like eagerness, defensiveness, confidence, and so on). 
• The dialogue prompts adjust the complexity of the conversation based on the learner’s performance, fostering growth through appropriately scaled interactions.

Before starting a role play, choose the language in which you want to practice (German or French) by selecting the language library. Then, make sure the prompt is written in that same language as the language library.

LinkedIn Learning has 19 standalone scenarios for French and German each (38 total) developed based on data showing the top conversations learners want to practice.

Course recommendations are manually curated for each of the 19 standalone scenarios in French and German, whereas learner-created scenarios currently do not have course recommendations.

Note: In English, we display default courses for learners regardless of whether it’s a standalone scenario or learner-created.

This incident usually occurs when either the selected language library, prompt, or the language spoken (if in voice mode) do not match. You may encounter:

• Scenario 1: Learner submits a prompt in a language that does not match the language library (e.g. a French prompt submitted the English library to initiate role play). If you share the link to a scenario you created, then the learner previewing that link must be in the same library as well or switch libraries to proceed.
• Scenario 2: A learner speaks a different language (if in voice mode) from the library language and/or prompt set. The transcript passed along to the AI prompt will be incorrect and impact your evaluation. 
  

How to resolve the issue

Go back to the homepage and change the language library to match the language you wish to use in your role play practice. Then, follow the same steps for "How do I create my own role play scenario?" (above) and ensure you are speaking the same language with the AI persona as the language you selected.
