Congratulations to Janet Stevens, ViaQuest Community Solutions Behavioral Consultant! Last week, Janet received the "Advocacy on Behalf of an Individual's Rights" Award at the INDIANA ASSOCIATION OF BEHAVIORAL CONSULTANTS Conference.
Last year, Janet began working with an individual who was under the guardianship of her sister and brother-in-law. Shortly after becoming involved, Janet grew deeply concerned about the individual’s well-being, as she was exhibiting symptoms of severe depression. As Janet learned more, she discovered restrictive measures imposed by the residential provider at the guardians’ direction. Janet recommended psychiatric evaluation and treatment, but the guardians refused to consent. Despite Janet’s persistent efforts to educate and collaborate with the guardians and waiver team regarding serious health, safety, and rights violations, no corrective action was taken.
Within weeks, the individual’s guardians terminated Janet from her role as Behavior Consultant. Janet submitted a detailed report to BDS, APS, and the Ombudsman, documenting the rights violations and health and safety concerns. Her commitment to advocacy proved effective. This fall, Janet was informed that BDS and APS had intervened. The court revoked guardianship from the individual’s family and appointed Indiana Disability Rights as temporary guardian. The individual transitioned to a new residential provider and case manager and began receiving appropriate psychiatric care. Janet was subsequently invited to rejoin the individual’s team and is once again providing support as she works toward restoring her physical and mental health.
Thank you, Janet, for exemplifying what true advocacy looks like. Your courage and persistence is changing lives.
