Helping my partner Mallory look for her next role as Creative / Brand director of a lifestyle brand has been so amazing. It's incredible to see how defining ICP (even of companies you want to work for) opens up so much focus and direction.
Steal this as a starting point in your job search.
1. Like a good 'gtm boyfriend' I created a Sales Navigator list following her giving me her top 50 brands she'd crush for - adding all to a list 'Mallory Brands'.
2. Then I searched leads at director+ levels of each in North America in Marketing + Creative. The list was about 1k people which is incredible. Everyone from VP of Marketing to VP Creative to Heads of Ecommerce.
3. I used Amplemarket to enrich the whole list in a fell swoop. 804 contacts came back.
4. I added a new tab to her Google Sheet 'Mallory Brands' titled 'Contacts'. I renamed the first tab 'Companies'.
5. Tada! I told her to reach out to 50-100 / day via email (and connect on LinkedIn. She will have a few different templates/talk tracks depending on how close to potential roles they are (will they be the hiring manager, teammate, or probably know the person in a diff dept.
This all took me 15 minutes TOPS. She was like WTF, how?
Team an incredible candidate with a very focused GTM strategy.
She realized quickly that even though she's won DOZENS of the top industry awards in publication, that:
1. Applying online (alone) is a waste of time. She needs to network in or reach out directly.
2. All her experience alone (without doing #1) will yield FAR LESSER results.
I'm confident she's going to get the momentum she needs to jump industries and work for a lifestyle brand (vs publishing).
And I'm also confident that they're going to get an absolute ALL-STAR that wouldn't have come on their radar if she didn't do the above.
And finally, I'm confident she's going to learn A TON QUICKLY if these are the best targets for her.
It's funny how few folks do this. Yet, how potent this is.
Let's win with better strategies, Happy Tuesday! :)
