Many organizations seek to address building background knowledge and growing vocabularies, but ReadWorks stands out in four key ways: (1) our research-based digital tools, features, and content; (2) our superb educator guidance; (3) our national reach; and (4) our mission as a nonprofit providing resources for FREE Each school year, ReadWorks is used by nearly 1 million educators and over 11.5 million students, including those in 93% of the highest-poverty K-8 schools–the population we are most focused on based on our mission. We are committed to providing the highest standard of quality resources to help address the student achievement gap, particularly regarding reading comprehension. The ReadWorks library offers over 6,000 texts on a diverse range of subjects to be used in any K- adult learner classroom, small group, or one-on-one intervention. As conversations around classroom screen time continue to grow, one thing is becoming increasingly clear across the education industry: technology should support instruction, not drive it. At ReadWorks, we’ve always believed that teachers deserve flexibility in how they deliver high-quality reading instruction. Whether that’s through printable texts, digital assignments, or a combination of both, the educator should remain in control. That’s why it’s encouraging, but not surprising, to see growing attention on balanced, evidence-based classroom technology use. This school year alone, more than 419,000 educators have actively used ReadWorks’ print capabilities to deliver free, high-quality reading materials that build background knowledge and vocabulary for students nationwide. We believe the future of edtech is not “digital-first” for the sake of being digital. It’s instruction-first. Teacher-first. Student-impact first. Read our full article below and share your perspective in the comments. 👇 #Education #EdTech #K12Education #Teachers #ReadingInstruction #EducationLeadership #ClassroomTechnology #ReadWorks

Nearly 1 in 3 teachers are still using discredited reading methods as reported in the recent article "by Jessika Harkey in the 74" outlines a heartbreaking reality: despite everything we know about the science of reading, millions of K-3 students are still being taught to read using debunked practices. But there’s an even deeper equity gap hiding beneath these statistics. In the article: David Griffith, one of the report’s co-authors says “Almost every literate person I’ve ever met remembers getting phonics,” Griffith said. “There is abundant evidence that phonics is successful, and what the research shows is that you need to know how to decode words in order to learn how to read. … If kids don’t learn to do this, then they won’t learn to read, and if they don’t learn to read, they won’t learn much else.” When there is only access to flawed reading methods, we inherently favor children who may already come to school with rich vocabularies and deep background knowledge. For a child who hasn’t had exposure to a wide variety of topics, decoding and comprehending becomes even more difficult. Science tells us that early exposure to high-quality, non-fiction texts builds the background knowledge and vocabulary can set the classroom knowledge to an equal starting level. When students are repeatedly exposed, especially those in under-resourced communities to learn about ecosystems, history, or space, no matter where they live, their reading comprehension grows. Socioeconomics shouldn't dictate a child's reading success. That’s why we ReadWorks provide millions of educators with free, evidence-based, non-fiction and fiction content rooted in the Science of Reading. 👉 Teachers, parents, and leaders: Access our free K-12 non-fiction library decodables and nonfiction articles today to bridge the knowledge gap. #ScienceOfReading #EducationEquity #LiteracyCrisis #EdTech #ReadWorks #K12Education https://lnkd.in/ecry2k5C
