About us
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is North America's largest transportation network, serving a population of 15.3 million people in the 5,000-square-mile area fanning out from New York City through Long Island, southeastern New York State, and Connecticut. The MTA comprises six agencies: MTA New York City Transit, MTA Bus Company, MTA Long Island Rail Road, MTA Metro-North Railroad, MTA Bridges and Tunnels, and MTA Construction & Development. The MTA network has the nation’s largest bus fleet and more subway and commuter rail cars than all other U.S. transit systems combined. It provides around 2.6 billion trips each year, accounting for about one-third of the nation’s mass transit users and two-thirds of its commuter rail passengers. MTA Bridges and Tunnels, which recorded a record 329 million crossings in 2019, carries more vehicles than any other bridge and tunnel authority in the nation. Grand Central Terminal is one of NYC’s most visited transit hubs, which makes it the perfect setting for an education in what moves New Yorkers. During Career Discovery Week, students from Transit Tech Career And Technical Education High School in Brooklyn were hosted by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority at Grand Central, where they toured the iconic train station and learned about public safety initiatives such as the MTA Police Department’s K-9 Program. We caught up with their guidance counselor and students, as well as MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber, about the importance of hands-on experiences through programs like #CareerDiscoveryWeek.

Progress report: Ridership is up and fare evasion is down. Here’s how we’re keeping up the momentum ⬇️ ✅ We’re investing in service, including adding more subway, bus, and commuter rail trips, and implementing a comprehensive redesign of the Queens bus network coming this summer. ✅ We’re making it easier than ever for people to pay their fare: Tap-and-go is available to all subway and bus riders, including students, Fair Fares riders, and Reduced-Fare customers. ✅ We’re tackling fare and toll evasion by making physical changes to stations and sustaining enforcement on subways, buses, commuter rails, and bridge and tunnel crossings. Earlier this year, I received a letter from a student at P.S. 282 in Brooklyn, about improvements we at NYCT can make. I was impressed and decided to visit the student body this month. What a time well spent! Find out more about the visit as reported by the Brooklyn Reporter: https://lnkd.in/eH3b-WVD

Thank you to Press Pass NYC, which provides resources to public schools to start and maintain student-run newspapers, for organizing this forum!
