A sincere thank you to the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Naval Business Unit team for making the long trip to Washington, D.C., for this first-of-its-kind announcement.   This Memorandum of Understanding establishes a strategic collaboration between Maritime Operations Group and HHI to develop Submarines-as-a-Service. This includes the exploration of development, manufacturing, and delivery of modern diesel-electric submarines and undersea technologies in support of U.S. Navy training, RDT&E, and allied mission requirements.   This partnership is also aligned with the broader “Make America Shipbuilding Great Again” (MASGA) initiative, which aims to revitalize U.S. shipbuilding capacity through major investment, industrial collaboration, and workforce development.   There’s still significant work ahead, but taking the first step toward an ambitious goal is often the hardest. From the very beginning, supporters like Senator Tim Sheehy and many others offered encouragement, along with a common refrain: “Come back when this is a little more real.”   This is us coming back.   We are committed to making this real and to closing the submarine availability gap by augmenting the Navy’s exquisite assets with commercially operated capability and allied shipbuilding expertise.   Grateful to everyone who made this milestone possible and looking forward to the work ahead. Daily Hard Tech Headlines: - Rocket Lab secured an $816M prime contract from the U.S. Space Development Agency and will deliver satellites for missile detection. - Maritime Operations Group has secured an MOU with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, the Korean shipbuilder. The MOU will enable exploration of potential joint submarine production and additional collaboration areas. - Otis Elevator Co., the world’s largest elevator company, has developed an API that allows robots to autonomously use elevators. - 4iG Space and Defence Technologies, the Hungarian telecommunications and IT systems integrator, is investing $100 million in Axiom Space to support the development of critical low Earth orbit (LEO) space infrastructure. - Anduril Industries has entered into an agreement with Boeing to supply solid rocket motors for Boeing’s mid-range missile defense systems, produced at Anduril’s McHenry, Mississippi facility. - The US Navy has selected HII Ingalls Shipbuilding to build its Small Surface Combatant ships, with initial delivery targeted for 2028. - Greg Abbott, Governor of Texas, announced just under $2M in funding to Prairie View A&M University to support workforce upskilling in 3D Heterogeneous Integration microelectronics technology as part of Texas’ push to become a leading semiconductor hub. - Researchers at UC San Diego can now leverage NVIDIA DGX B200 through the San Diego Supercomputer Center, expanding advanced AI research capabilities across campus via the Hao AI Lab. - James Lydiard has joined SPLYCAP as a Venture Partner, Aerospace and Defense Technology. - Brad Chatlos has joined HavocAI as Navy Program Lead. HavocAI develops maritime autonomy technology. - Rob Lamontagne, a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel and command pilot, has joined Katalyst Space Technologies as Director of National Security Partnerships. - Apex Defense conference kicks off in late January covering maritime autonomy, C-UAS, contested logistics, critical infrastructure security, and other core defense tech areas. Hosted with Hudson Institute. - Firehawk Aerospace has announced a rocket manufacturing expansion to the State of Mississippi, acquiring a DCMA-rated integration facility in Crawford, Mississippi to increase manufacturing capacity. The move adds to Mississippi’s aerospace and defense ecosystem, alongside firms such as Anduril Industries, Rocket Lab, and Relativity Space with footprints in the state.

In honor of Veterans Day, this week we're highlighting two co-founders (Alienati24) who served in the U.S. Navy before teaming up to start Maritime Operations Group - a company bringing the "as a service" model to the submarine industry through partnership with allied shipbuilders. Patrick Nanson and Parker Stratton are both 14 year Navy SEAL Officer veterans with deep experience in undersea warfare - including riding "underwater go-karts" into denied waters. The two co-founded Maritime Operations Group and set out on an unstoppable mission to do something no private company had tried before: field hybrid diesel-electric submarines “as-a-service,” enabling the Navy to add under-sea capacity years faster than traditional procurement. Their journey - from uniformed service, to advising the Maritime Industrial Base Office, to launching a venture that now helps write FY-26 NDAA language - shows what’s possible when veterans turn their service experience into innovation. If we don’t integrate diesels into our submarine force, we might never reach the size we need to meet our strategic undersea objectives. I’m pleased to share my latest article in Proceedings — “The Path to a Bigger Submarine Fleet Includes Diesels”. I argue that to scale a credible undersea force, the U.S. Navy must supplement its nuclear fleet with diesel-electric assets. Doing so offers cost, flexibility, scale, and deterrence advantages in an era of global competition under the sea. https://lnkd.in/gyiQSRAG
