At the 2026 Not-for-Profit Healthcare Investor Conference in NYC last week, I moderated a Vitalic Health CFO power panel with Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) member leaders Robin Damschroder, FACHE, Dennis Dahlen and Kevin Smith that boldly addressed the growing tension between financial sustainability and affordability. These are executives who understand the weight of near-term financial pressure while being tasked to invest in innovation, prevention, and population outcomes that pay off over a horizon most budget cycles cannot see. The conversation was honest about where AI and predictive analytics are genuinely moving the needle and where the industry is still overestimating their near-term impact. It was direct about what the shift from sick care to health actually demands at the finance level. And it asked the question every healthcare leader should be sitting with: five years from now, what evidence will tell us we actually evolved for the better? The urgency is real.
