We’re thrilled to announce that we have been selected by the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS) at the Library of Congress to curate and host the nationwide 2026 Summer Reading Program! This summer's theme is "Unearth a Story." From June 15 to August 11, we're inviting adults from across the country to dig into stories hidden in landscapes, archives, family histories, science, and lived experience. Join live author talks and webinars via Zoom featuring special guests such as Peter Heller, Maeve Conran, M. Leona Godin, and more. Then, every other week, explore a new National Park as you listen to our immersive Narrated Soundscapes series. Dig into new stories with us this summer! I am incredibly proud of our Youth and Child Services Team at Braille Institute! 🌟 We were recently honored to receive a Resolution from the California Senate, presented by Senator Tony Strickland. This recognition celebrates our work and community partnerships in bringing an accessible beeping egg hunt to the City of Huntington Beach. Traditional events aren't always designed for everyone. By using audible easter eggs and large, high contrast eggs, this event ensures that children who are blind or low vision can fully experience the joy of this springtime tradition. Thank you to Senator Tony Strickland and all of our incredible partners including the City of Huntington Beach, Huntington Beach Fire Department and Kiwanis Club of Huntington Beach who help us create a more inclusive world! #InclusionMatters #Accessibility #CommunityImpact #BrailleInstitute Allison Burdett, Naaman Córdova-Muenzberg, Shawn Wood, Amy Borton, Katherine Syer, PhD, Elizabeth Reyes, Jocelyn Martinez Rivera, Kyra Mayes, Josephine Hernandez, Magy Castillo

Some moments remind you exactly why this work matters, and this was one of them. At Braille Institute of America, we believe a students geography should never define their access to opportunity, and the first ever Kenya Regional Braille Challenge brought that belief to life in a powerful way. In conversations with students and educators across Kenya, one message came through clearly: they want more Braille, more access, and more opportunities. In schools where educators worry daily about running out of braille paper, braillers, and essential learning materials, this program represented hope, visibility, and real investment in the future of blind and low vision students. Bringing Braille Challenge to Kenya has been transformative. Across three regionals, we are impacting more than 1,000 students alongside hundreds of educators, volunteers, and community members who came together with incredible passion and purpose. We are grateful to Clovernook Center for the Blind & Visually Impaired for their partnership and shared vision in helping make this milestone possible. Thank you as well to HumanWare and Del Monte Foods for their generous sponsorship and belief in this mission. And deep gratitude to the International Programs team for their dedication to expanding access, strengthening sustainability, and creating opportunities for students around the world. The work you do every day brought us to this moment, and continues to open doors where they are needed most. And we’re just getting started. One more regional is happening on the coast next week, and we’re excited to continue building on this momentum and impact. Grateful to everyone who helped make history together. 🇰🇪 Madeleine Hernandez Allison Burdett Dimitri Kales Samuel Foulkes Kelly Lusk, PhD Dominic Kiamba Stephanie Jones Stephanie Kiamba Rosalyn S. Coachella Valley, we’re home! Braille Institute has been proudly serving the Coachella Valley region since 1973. But yesterday, May 6, we celebrated the start of a new era with the official groundbreaking of our new, full-service community hub for people with blindness and low vision. One-quarter of the Coachella Valley population is 65 or older, and that number continues to grow as more people retire in the area. This age group is far more likely to develop vision loss due to macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. Our new center marks an expansion of our FREE services for Coachella Valley residents to meet this growing need. Thank you to our incredible community partners for joining us yesterday and all you do to make our mission possible! If we had to sum up the Braille Challenge 2026 season in a single word? Record-breaking. Today we’re thrilled to announce our 2026 Braille Challenge Finalists. This season, we had participants from six different countries: Australia, Canada, Ireland, Kenya, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In order to place, the finalists had to earn the top scores out of over 2,000 total competitors across the globe. That’s no easy feat, and we couldn’t be prouder of their dedication and perseverance. We are also honored to announce the recipient of the 2026 Braille Challenge Teacher of the Year for Excellence in Braille Instruction: Casey L. Robertson from Mississippi. Casey is a nationally recognized educator and advocate for braille literacy. She works with the Professional Development and Research Institute on Blindness at Louisiana Tech University. Congratulations, Casey! We look forward to welcoming our finalists and Casey L. Robertson to Braille Challenge Finals next month, where Orientation and Mobility Specialist, Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapist, and content creator Mike Mulligan will join us as our keynote speaker.
