Extreme weather and climate-related hazards are reshaping development pathways, disrupting economies, and testing the capacity of institutions to protect lives and livelihoods. EVENT! From Science to Decisions: Weather and Climate Intelligence as Strategic Infrastructure ☀️🌊🌡️ The science to save lives already exists. So why are some countries still absorbing disasters that others saw coming? That gap, between what we know and who gets to act on it, is one of the most consequential divides in global development today. Join us in London or online on Tuesday 3rd March for the Global Development Lab Annual Lecture with Professor Celeste Saulo, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization. A meteorologist and atmospheric scientist from Argentina, Prof. Saulo has spent decades at the frontier of weather and climate research, across institutions in Latin America, the US, and Europe. She led Argentina's National Meteorological Service for nearly a decade before being elected, as the first woman, to lead the WMO in 2023. She brings both the science and the institutional experience to know exactly where the gaps are and what it takes to close them. This lecture will argue that weather and climate intelligence isn't a technical luxury. It's strategic infrastructure, and unequal access to it is driving unequal outcomes. From early warning systems to last-mile communication, the tools exist. A profile in Nation Media Group on School of Convergence Co-Director Prof. Faith Osier, highlighting her work to strengthen vaccine manufacturing capacity in Africa. Through Chanjo Hub, she is working with partners in Kenya, Ghana and South Africa to build locally led vaccine manufacturing capability, from piloting an mRNA malaria vaccine to developing alternative production platforms, all with equitable technology transfer and long-term talent development at the core. I’m pleased to share that our article, “𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀' 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝗯-𝗦𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮: 𝗔 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗮-𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀,” is now published and available online. The study synthesizes evidence on how agroforestry adoption affects farmers’ income, consumption, crop productivity, and food security across sub-Saharan Africa, combining systematic review and meta-analysis approaches.
