As we tackle unpredictable weather across the world, a #throwback interview with WMO Deputy Secretary-General Ko Barrett reminds us that: “Reliable forecasts don’t happen by accident. No country can know the world’s weather on their own.” Weather and climate do not stop at borders. Through the World Meteorological Organization, countries share observations and data that make early warnings and forecasts possible. International cooperation is not optional. It is the foundation of safety, resilience, and informed decisions. Read the interview: https://lnkd.in/eM5u3zbC

The U.N.'s authoritative voice on weather, climate and water
Info
We advance meteorological science for a better future for all. WMO provides the framework for international cooperation to advance meteorological, climatological, hydrological, and related environmental services to improve the well-being of all. This is why WMO advocates for an Earth system approach to encompass all the weather, climate, and water-related cycles traversing the globe, irrespective of national boundaries.

Climate science is the foundation of effective climate action in an era of accelerating impacts, growing vulnerability, and rising economic costs. This was my message to the IPCC Bureau meeting today taking place at WMO headquarters in Geneva today. The World Meteorological Organization and UN Environment Programme are the proud parents of the IPCC. ✅ Continued scientific integrity, inclusivity, and global cooperation must remain at the heart of the IPCC process. ✅ The credibility of rigorous and policy-relevant climate science is one of our strongest collective assets and we must continue to safeguard and strengthen its role. Reliable data is critical for effective climate and hydrological services and early warnings. Yet hydrological monitoring capacity is on the decline. Many National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) operate with constrained financial and human resources, which can impact the quality of hydrological monitoring and related services. This challenge is often linked to limited awareness of and visibility of the critical value of hydrological monitoring data, the information derived from this data, and the services provided using this information. Join our webinar hosted by the WMO HydroHub to explore the socioeconomic benefits of investing in hydrological monitoring. Learn about methodologies, data, practical tools, and much more. Learn how to demonstrate return on investment and influence decision-makers. 📅 04 March 2026 📍Online 👉 Register here: https://lnkd.in/eFZWQRJ4

Join Celeste Saulo, WMO Secretary-General at the Imperial Global Development Lab Annual Lecture on 3 March to find out how we turn science into real-world protection through stronger national meteorological and hydrological services and #EarlyWarningsForAll. Register: https://lnkd.in/eiKp27Dt
From Science to Decisions: Weather and Climate Intelligence as Strategic Infrastructure ☁️☀️🌡️ I'm delighted to be guest speaker at this year's Imperial Global Development Lab Annual Lecture on 3 March. Extreme weather and climate-related hazards are reshaping development pathways, disrupting economies, and testing the capacity of institutions to protect lives and livelihoods. At the same time, scientific understanding and predictive capabilities have advanced rapidly, offering unprecedented opportunities to anticipate risk. I'll be explaining how at the World Meteorological Organization, we seek practical bridges to convert science into scalable public value through strong national meteorological and hydrological services, #EarlyWarningsForAll and partnerships that align innovation, policy, and delivery. Please register here to join the event at 1500 GMT. https://lnkd.in/eGC4kGKu

Important read here from our friends at Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO. Our oceans absorb around 25% of human-produced carbon dioxide, helping to slow global warming. A new scientific assessment, warns that this vital climate service is changing and that major knowledge gaps still limit our ability to predict how the ocean carbon sink will evolve. Closing the carbon-knowledge gap is essential for stronger, science-based climate action. Read the full report: https://lnkd.in/ehtrE7dq Photo by Frederic Christian

A new visitor center for the UN Complex in Geneva Yesterday, the building that will host the Visitor Experience at the United Nations Office at Geneva was completed and the top-off ceremony took place in the presence of the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. Swiss Vice-President Ignazio Cassis and Geneva State Councilor Nathalie Fontanet represented the Swiss authorities to unveil the buildings that will host an immersive experience allowing visitors to impersonate a diplomatic delegate and to learn more on Geneva, the city that works for the world. Together with the Musée international de la Croix-Rouge et du Croissant-Rouge on humanitarian aid and CERN's Science Portal on research and anticipation, 3 pillars of the Geneva hub for multilateral cooperation are now also experiences for visitors, regardless of what brings them to Geneva. The Portail des Nations was completed thanks to the generous endeavour of private donors under the auspices of the Fondation Portail des Nations and a public-private partnership facilitated by Switzerland. Opening is scheduled in May. Keep posted: https://lnkd.in/e8FSu856

Early warnings in action. As a major winter storm affects the US and Canada, forecasts and alerts are supporting emergency response on the ground. Please follow local guidance and stay safe. #EarlyWarningsForAll Image: CIRA/NOAA
Another week. Another storm. A major winter storm - commonly known as a Nor'easter - is battering cities on the east coast of USA and Canada with high winds, heavy snowfall and dangerous blizzard conditions. There is widespread travel and economic disruption, some schools and businesses are closed, and there is a risk of power outages. In the USA, major hubs including New York, Philadelphia, Boston and Washington are impacted. This impressive imagery from Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere and NOAA Satellite and Information Service gives you an idea of the scale of this storm. The US National Weather Service and Environment and Climate Change Canada are issuing numerous advisories and warnings which are informing emergency action on the ground. This is in line with the mandate of all members of the World Meteorological Organization to protect life and property. If you are in the affected area, please heed all the warnings and stay safe. #EarlyWarningsForAll

Since 14 January, France received 37 consecutive days of rainfall - a record since the start of measurements in 1959, according to METEO FRANCE. This satellite imagery shows the extent of massive flooding. The economic disruption is immense, but forecasts and early warnings - including many top-level Red Alerts - limited casualties. That's why the top priority of the World Meteorological Organization is #EarlyWarningsForAll. https://lnkd.in/eettgEuZ
