Then after some years, I joined a bank, and actually got to do it ❤️ What I'd do differently, knowing what I know now (Saved You A Click version): 1. Assemble a multi-discipline team. (Service Design is not, in fact, UX. Sorry to the "Everything is *user experience*" crowd who might be seeing this.) 2. Half of which should be from *people* roles. (HR, yes, but also Operations.) 3. When Bold Studio asked about values-led design, it opened up conversations we need more of. William Kelly and the team at Bold Studio just published a thoughtful interview exploring Driftime® – A Design & Impact Agency's journey, the birth of Design Declares, and what running a values-led business actually looks like day to day. What struck me during our conversation was how rare these stories still are. Agencies doing meaningful work often operate quietly, while those making the loudest noise might not be creating the deepest impact. There's an interesting balance we've all noticed. Lean too heavily into pure creativity, and sustainability becomes an afterthought. Focus solely on sustainability, and the creative spark can dim. The magic happens when both elements strengthen each other. For those commissioning design, this creates an opportunity. Look beyond the obvious portfolio pieces. Seek partners who've figured out how to make sustainability fuel creativity, not constrain it. They're out there, often doing their best work without the fanfare. William approached me after INTL last year (definitely there for the other speakers, not me 😅). What started as a brief chat has become this deeper exploration of how design can genuinely create positive change. Design is never done. Unlike a building or printed book, a digital product is a living entity. Yet, teams often treat a launch as the final destination. Launch day is just the start of continuous learning, iteration, and growth. User behaviours evolve, technologies advance, and competitors innovate. Great product teams see their work as ever-evolving prototypes, embracing minor tweaks, regular user testing, and iterative improvements. Why risk user dissatisfaction with massive, infrequent overhauls? Continuous, incremental improvements better align your product with evolving user needs. Great teams celebrate even minor adjustments—a button tweak boosting conversions or gradual dashboard refinements delighting users. A design standing still is already behind—abandon the "set it and forget it" mentality. Embrace "iterate and elevate." I'd love to hear how your team keeps pace.

Timely that the next Service Design Global Conference is focused on the theme Business Transformation By Design. I've been seeing this a lot, where digital is driving the bus of transformation but leaves so much value behind because of the lack of an integrative and systemic view of how the human experience and back of house structures and even value propositions can be reconfigured in the context of digital enablement. Service Designers have important roles to play in this, and also need high levels of digital literacy and strategic and systemic design chops to play this role. https://lnkd.in/g2epqV2N

A memo from Tobi Lutke of Shopify (source and full link in comments) All interesting from a future of work perspective. But point 2 and its phrasing are particularly salient for design lead organisations. Fast creation of prototypes can and should encourage more experimentation and more user testing, and ultimately better results. (Originally found this via Greg Isenberg)

AI for Designers - is your head melted? I don't mean to add to the AI noise out there, but.... We attended a webinar recently titled 'AI for UI Designers: From Fear to Fluency' with Paul Boag. It was one of the most reassuring and practical sessions we have seen on the topic. He cut through the noise and focused on where the real value is. The main takeaway - AI is at best average at design. It cannot bring taste, judgement or strategic thinking. That is still the job. Anyone claiming they are firing design teams and vibe coding their entire products are talking shite. There's a good chance they don’t know what quality looks like. Exceptional work still requires direction, context and experience as well as AI. AI is a tool. A powerful one. But designers are not redundant - we are evolving.
