With the news of Gorden Wagener's departure, the latest "Did you know?" had to move back a bit but it doesn't mean it is less important. Car Design departments are changing. New design and development processes, structures that are getting more responsibilities (such as Brand), and a tendency towards fewer leadership and management roles lead to a statement that might at first scare you. But it shouldn't. Yes, we will see design departments shrink. However, that will mainly happen in the traditional car design work. Other areas such as brand, experience, visualisation, innovation etc. that will more and more be included in design will see an increase of new talent coming into the OEM design departments. At the same time, we currently expect the contracting and freelance market to see an upswing again. Certain skill sets might not be seen as a key skill internally, but they are not disappearing and are therefore more required as external and temporary support. #konzepthaus #cardesign #automotivedesign #transportationdesign

The Symbiotic Relationship of AI and Design In my conversations with both aspiring and seasoned designers, a palpable sense of anxiety often emerges when discussing the influence of artificial intelligence on our craft. This apprehension—born from a fear of obsolescence—is understandable, but it is also a narrative that misses the larger, more exciting picture. My perspective, honed by appreciating the storytelling power and creative efficiency that AI can bring. AI as a "Creative Collaborator" Think of AI as a partner in the creative process. It can generate initial concepts, explore variations of a design. This frees designers from repetitive tasks and allows them to focus on the higher-level, strategic design aspects. AI as a Powerful Design Accelerator AI isn't a replacement for human creativity; it's a powerful accelerator for a trained and skilled designer. It serves as an extension of a designer's capabilities, enabling them to make better and faster decisions by rapidly exploring concepts and giving choices in addition to the proposals of the team. Enhancing Skills and Staying Relevant AI isn't here to replace the designer; it's here to empower them to become better. Most CMF decisions are made in the first 10 seconds. That moment when a sample comes out of the box - before specs, tolerances, or checklists - you already have a gut reaction. The problem is we rarely capture it. We move straight to rational checks and end up justifying a feeling we never wrote down. When I review CMF samples, I always start with a first read: What stands out immediately? What feels right (or off)? Where does my attention go first? Only after that do I sense check against intent, user, and context. I’ve put the CMF sample review sheet I use into a simple worksheet.
