Cheryl Watson shared thisThe UK Government’s Post-16 Education & Skills White Paper is a welcome step—but one that raises just as many questions as it answers. At TechnologyOne, we believe real progress depends on understanding the landscape of institutions within our community and students’ lived experiences. That’s why we partnered with HEPI and CRSP to sponsor research into the Minimum Income Standard for Students (2025). This is just the beginning—more insights to come as we continue exploring what institutions and students truly need to thrive.Cheryl Watson shared thisThe UK Government’s Post-16 Education & Skills White Paper sets out bold reforms for how England equips learners with the skills our economy needs. At TechnologyOne, we welcome this focus and recognise that progress depends on addressing students’ real-world challenges. That’s why we sponsored the Higher Education Policy Institute’s and Centre for Research in Social Policy (CRSP) at Loughborough University’s research on the Minimum Income Standard for Students (2025), revealing that many first-year students now need around £418 per week (including rent) to reach a minimum living standard. Cheryl Watson shared thisProud to launch the second phase of our research with HEPI, TechnologyOne, and CRSP at Loughborough University 🎓 This time, we focus on first-year students — revealing what it really costs to start university and live to a socially acceptable standard. 💰 £61,000 needed over a 3-year degree (£77,000 in London) — excluding fees 📉 Maintenance loans cover just half of what freshers need 🧑🎓 First-year costs are higher due to setup and settling-in expenses This builds on last year’s report and gives us a full picture of student living costs across the entire university journey. Higher education is changing — and so are student needs. Time to rethink how we support them. #HEPI #TechnologyOne #CRSP #StudentFinance #HigherEducation #EdTechCheryl Watson shared thisTechnologyOne in partnership with Higher Education Policy Institute and Center of Research in Social Policy (CRSP) at Loughborough University launched our first report in 2024 looking at 2nd and 3rd year students and the minimum income standard they would need to comfortably survive life at uni, it was inevitable we would have to come back and finish this. Today, we are proud to launch the second phase of the report which provides a measure of how much it costs to reach a socially acceptable standard of living as a 1st year student. It's not just enough to survive on, but a measure of what it takes to fully participate in higher education. Combined with last year's research, that also gives us a measure of a students' total living costs across the three or four years of their degree. Higher education in the UK is rapidly evolving – the needs of students are changing even faster. Universities across the UK are under increasing pressure to respond not only to academic expectations, but to the financial, technological and wellbeing realities of modern student life. 🎓 To have a minimum socially acceptable standard of living, a student needs £61,000 over the course of a three-year degree, or £77,000 if studying in London – all excluding fees 🎓 First-year students face higher costs than other students, due to one-off ‘setting-up’ costs (eg buying a laptop) as well as ‘settling-in’ costs (such as freshers’ week activities) 🎓 For students in England, the maximum annual maintenance loan available to people from low-income households is £10,544 – this covers just half the costs faced by freshers To find out more and read the report, visit this link: https://lnkd.in/dmpH22wj Thank you to Nicholas Hillman, Lucy Haire Josh Freeman Cheryl Watson Amanda Cheung Georgia Edwards the team at the Higher Education Policy Institute and CRSP Loughborough University #research #highereducation #makinglifesimpleforourcommunity

Cheryl Watson reacted on thisToday is my last day at Technology1, closing the chapter on an incredible 15 year journey. …and what a ride it’s been! I joined planning on staying for a couple of years to pay for my second uni degree and here I am almost half my life later reflecting on a journey I didn’t expect, shaped by people I won’t forget. Everyone always says it, but it couldn’t be more true: it’s the people that make a company great. Over 15 years, I feel fortunate to have worked with some amazing people. Leaders who challenged me and backed me. Mentors and coaches who gave me more than they know. Teams I’ve had the privilege of leading and just as often, being led by. And every person that got in the arena with me when things got hard (p.s. sorry for being so annoying some times). The list is too long to name everyone so I’ll just say thank you. Genuinely. The next chapter is something very different. New learnings, new pressure, new opportunities but I’m looking forward to seeing where it leads!

Over the past few months, through conversations with both clients and consultants, a clear pattern has started to emerge around AMS support. For many organisations, the challenge isn’t the platform itself; it’s how AMS support is being delivered. The most common issues I hear are: - Delayed SLA responses, sometimes stretching to 48 hours even for priority tickets - Lack of continuity in assigned consultants, leading to lost context and repeated onboarding - Limited ownership and understanding of the client environment - An AMS model that becomes purely reactive, with little focus on continuous improvement - Unplanned additional hours or charges, often driven by unclear scope boundaries or reactive delivery AMS should feel like an extension of your internal team, with continuity, accountability, and a genuine understanding of your environment, not a revolving door of resources or just another ticket queue. If any of this resonates, it’s often worth getting an objective look at how your current support model is really performing: what’s working, what isn’t, and where value may be leaking. If you’d like an independent review of your current AMS set-up and support approach, feel free to reach out. Sometimes an outside perspective is all that’s needed to reset expectations and outcomes. If you work in government, you'll have heard a lot about automation lately. But what should it look like? HMRC's journey over the past decade provides an answer. HMRC collects over £800 billion annually, serving 45 million individuals and 5.5 million businesses. When they established their Automation Delivery Centre in 2016, it wasn't about chasing tech trends. It was about improving how government works. By 2018, their robotic process automation had already processed 10 million transactions. The results were immediate: call handling times dropped 40%, employer registration costs fell 80%, and 350 skilled staff were freed from repetitive work to focus on supporting customers. What stands out isn't just the technology. It's the approach. More than 300 process improvement ideas came from HMRC staff themselves, then scaled through robust governance. This is digital transformation done right: empowering people, not replacing them. Now every department faces the same challenge. The £3.25 billion Transformation Fund and 15% cost reduction targets by 2029-30 mean delivering more with less. The National Audit Office estimates £36 billion could be saved annually by automating routine tasks across government. HMRC shows this is possible. At SCC, we've supported HMRC's evolution for over a decade, most recently extending our Declaration Management Service contract through 2028. Our role has been providing the scaffolding for their vision: reliable technology that turns ambition into reality. For civil servants wrestling with legacy systems and rising expectations, the path is mapped out. Start with your people, focus on outcomes, partner for the long term. The real return isn't just pounds saved, but public trust earned through faster, fairer services. What lessons from HMRC's journey could help your department deliver more for less? #DigitalTransformation #PublicSector #Automation #HMRC #GovernmentEfficiency

The team have delivered some fantastic updates recently but its hard for our Accounting Partners to keep up especially as we are in the middle of so many firms finalising or reassessing their MTD Plans. The product side is easier for us to update you on now we have this fantastic new timeline highlighting our recent releases along with a selection of upcoming updates https://lnkd.in/ePGGm3H4 The main points we are hearing are; 1) Practices had a plan to go with their incumbent software with a view that this helps internal efficiencies because the team already know the tool, the realisation has set in that some of the proposed workflows wont be easy for clients to do themselves. 2) The costs associated with an MTD solution aren't always transparent so some vendors are shamelessly excluding information about upgrades or additional tools that are required until the firm finds this out themselves, limiting features or needing extra bolt ons instantly eats into any slim profit margins this client base may provide a Practice. 3) Practices rethinking how hands on they will be during the setup process, the thought of getting the clients to pick a software and set themselves up is being met with the reality that some clients wont do this by the deadlines and others could get it wrong and create a lot more work to rectify further down the line. FreeAgent and other vendors have different approaches and the industry is blessed with some fantastic tools to help solve these problems and no one software will suit every scenario but firms should guide clients wisely. Some firms are way ahead and got software comparisons and pricing plans nailed and communicated so its certainly not all doom and gloom. I have linked a couple of my heavily biased favourites from this week in the comments.

Informative session at Tech On Toast's Weareservice event this week on labour, hosted expertly by Lewis Rhys Davies and the Nory team. Great to hear from Jack Lander's Pizzarova Digby+Fox Hospitality and Digbeth Dining Club about the labour challenges and impact on labour. Of course, they discussed where QR codes can be leveraged in the right places to help staffing pressures and to improve the guest experience. As Nory's allergen partner, Ingredifind see significant labour benefits in giving staff and guests digital access to allergen data, so queries get answered at the table. No interruptions for GM or chef. No errors. No word of mouth risk. With allergy orders taking 10x longer to take than non-allergy ones, has your business looked at the ongoing impact of allergy queries on labour and service?
