𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 LAYRR has unveiled a breakthrough nano-coating process that could transform the way we think about metal powders in AM. We spend our days at LAYRR working on applying atomic precision nanocoatings to break performance bottlenecks for advanced materials. Explaining those concepts to a younger audience is a completely different challenge! Fortunately, we have Henry Hoddinott, one of our star engineers with a particular knack for taking highly complex scientific ideas and making them engaging and easy to understand. Recently, he took time out to support Discover Materials, a fantastic UK initiative dedicated to showing students what materials science actually looks like in reality. The world is going to need new ways to build and scale materials and the long-term future of our industry relies entirely on a strong pipeline of future talent. 🚀 The Future of UK Manufacturing: Why CMCs are the "Sovereign Shield" The next wave of UK industrial excellence won't be built on traditional alloys alone. It will be built on Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs). Our CEO, Phil Hunter, recently joined the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology workshop to discuss the critical role CMCs can play in the UK’s manufacturing roadmap. From hypersonic systems to next-gen aerospace and fusion energy, CMCs are the only materials that can survive where others melt—withstanding temperatures over 1,500°C while remaining lightweight and tough. Why the UK is focusing on CMCs: 🔥Heat & Performance: Unlike brittle monolithic ceramics, CMCs use a fiber-reinforced matrix to gain "fracture toughness," making them essential for jet engine mixers and thermal protection. 👑Sovereign Capability: To move away from overseas dependencies, the UK is looking to develop domestic manufacturing for CMC fibres. ♻️Sustainability & Efficiency: Lighter components mean fuel savings. High-temp operation means more efficient combustion. It’s a win for both performance and the planet.
