Space

Photography and astronomy offer humanity a fascinating view into the universe.
Two side-by-side images show distant, irregularly shaped galaxies with bright, glowing blue cores against a dark space background.

Astronomers Capture ‘Exceptionally Rare’ Star Explosion for Only the Second Time in 20 Years

In March, the Einstein Probe, a satellite made by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in partnership with the European Space Agency, detected a very brief flash of "soft X-rays" emitted by a galaxy about 500 million light-years away. Within an hour, ground-based telescopes, including several at National Science Foundation (NSF) NOIRLab facilities, began investigating the region, getting a front-row seat to bombastic and very special star death.

Vaonis’ Newest Smart Telescopes Look Stellar

While the news flew under my radar a bit, Vaonis recently unveiled its next generation of smart telescopes for astrophotographers: the Vespera 3 and the Vespera Pro 2. Each smart telescope promises exciting upgrades for astronomy enthusiasts and improved imaging capabilities.

A rocky, dusty surface with scattered stones of various sizes. Part of a circular, metallic object appears in the lower right corner. The scene looks barren and textured.

50 Years Later: The First Photo Ever Taken on Mars

This week marked the 50th anniversary of the NASA Viking 1 spacecraft landing safely on Mars, spearheading a new era of space exploration. Just minutes after Viking 1 landed on the Red Planet, it captured a photo, the first ever taken on the surface of Mars and the first time any human had ever seen a photo from another planet.

A dark celestial body, likely a moon or planet, is silhouetted against a faint, glowing halo of light with a starry background in space. The object's surface features are barely visible.

Artemis II’s Nikon Z9 Was Way More Important for Science Than Expected

Researchers at Tokyo City University just published a new paper in The Astrophysical Journal Letters based on photos the Artemis II astronauts captured in space during their lunar flyby using the Nikon Z9. The researchers analyzed the solar corona images captured by the Artemis II astronauts, yielding new insights into the Sun's coronal structure and demonstrating the value of taking cameras into space.

A view from the International Space Station shows swirling green and purple auroras above Earth’s atmosphere, with parts of the space station visible in the foreground.

Astronaut Captures Dazzling Aurora Dancing Above Earth

ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot (@soph_astro) was recently treated to incredible, dazzling aurora displays in space while aboard the International Space Station (ISS). While Adenot and the ESA shared photos last month, Adenot just shared an incredible video of auroras from space on social media today.

A dense cluster of bright blue, white, and orange stars against a dark background, resembling a sparkling, glowing patch in space. This image shows a globular star cluster with many stars close together.

Hubble Delivers Beautiful Photo of a Glowing Cosmic Chandelier

The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope is still going strong and delivering unbelievably beautiful deep-space images. The latest Hubble image shows globular cluster NGC 6723, sometimes called the Chandelier Cluster. This name is well-earned, as it is an extremely dense stellar cluster, each star looking a little light on a giant cosmic chandelier.
