You can use Omni to search for books at Carleton, at Omni libraries, or from other academic libraries across North America.

Search and Find

Use Omni to search for books and other materials you are interested in at Carleton and other libraries.

By default, Omni is set to Carleton + Omni Libraries. This means it will search Carleton's collection as well as the collections of all Omni libraries in Ontario.

If you want to search for books in libraries across North America, change the search scope to Beyond Carleton + Omni libraries.

Request

Once you have found a book you are interested in, you have a few options:

If the book is available electronically, you'll be able to access it immediately by following the links in Omni.

If the book is available in print at Carleton, under Print Availability you will be able to use Omni to request the item for pickup. We'll retrieve the book for you and notify you by email once it is ready for you to pick up at the Library Services desk.

If you only need to read a chapter of the book, you can use the Scan on Demand option in Omni and we'll scan the chapter and send it to you by email.

If the book is only available in print from other libraries, you will see an option to request a physical copy from another library. Often you'll also see an estimate of how long it will take for the book to arrive, as well as a note on how long you will be allowed to borrow the item. As soon as we receive the book we'll notify you and let you know it is ready for you to pick up at the Library Services desk.

Again, if you only need to read a chapter in the book, you can use Omni to request a digital chapter, and the other library will send you an electronic scan of the chapter by email.

For more information, see: Requesting Items.

Read

You can take out several books at once and keep them for several weeks. For details, see: Borrowing Privileges.

If you still need a book by the time it comes due and needs to be returned, you can extend the loan period by renewing the loan in Omni.

Return

Once you are done with a book you can return it to the Library.
