Innovative “magneto-fluorescent” core/shell nanostructures were created via self-assembly of CdS quantum dots (QDs) over SrFe12O19 (MPs) surface, to accumulate the optical as-well-as magnetic properties into a single unit. Innovative “magneto-fluorescent” core/shell nanostructures were created via self-assembly of CdS quantum dots (QDs) over SrFe12O19 (MPs) surface, to accumulate the optical as-well-as magnetic properties into a single unit. SrFe12O19/CdS nanostructures prepared with different loadings of core, provide diverseness in the properties. X-ray diffraction analysis supports the formation of core, shell and the core/shell nanostructures. Optical studies proved that the luminescence is due to the CdS QDs with improved spectral resolution. High-coercivity indicates hard-magnetic nature of the MNPs which remain same even after the core/shell formation and indicates core/shell formation, as there is no interaction of core and shell interface. Derivatives of hysteresis provide information on new properties of the structures. FTIR spectroscopy signifies the characteristic surface properties of core/shell material. Multi-functionality of the core/shell nanoparticles has prospective applications e.g., optical-reporters coupled with magnetic-handler for use in bio-assays and the cell sorting applications where the permanent magnetic field is required.

The various physical characterization techniques and microbial studies confirmed that these nanoparticles can be used for bioimaging and cell sorting applications.
