🧬🦠What happens to our gut microbiome when we take a break from animal products for a month? New publication https://lnkd.in/dHCfukTp from our group at BSRC Alexander Fleming! Extensive changes occur, affecting microbiome composition and function, with responses being passive (e.g. cholesterol biosynthesis decreases) or compensatory (e.g. vitamin B2 biosynthesis increases). Multi-omic integration showed that these shifts associate with changes in host plasma biology and highlight how quickly our internal ecosystem can rewire itself to influence biological pathways that are important for our health. Congratulations to Christina Emmanouil for leading this work and to all co-authors Alexandros Simistiras, Stavros Glentis, Maria Anezaki Nikos Scarmeas, Pantelis Hatzis, Konstantinos Rouskas! With special thanks to Theodosios Kyriakou for his help and support! 🧬🦠 #microbiome #dietaryrestriction #ERC

A new study by the Antigone Dimas #lab has shown that short-term dietary restriction of animal products alters metabolic profiles and modulates immune function, with changes in a direction suggesting mostly positive effects on health is now published in #Nature! Congratulations to all authors! https://lnkd.in/gXWysH3u
New publication from our group at BSRC Alexander Fleming! 🤩 🥳 🎁 🎄 We have shown that short-term restriction of animal products in healthy individuals leads to rapid and measurable changes in metabolic and immune pathways. The intervention was associated with improved lipid profiles, reduced low-grade inflammation and shifts toward a more regulated immune state, highlighting how even brief dietary changes can influence biological processes linked to long-term health. Congrats to all who contributed to this study: Elena Loizidou Katerina Palaiokrassa Alexandros Simistiras Petros Barmpounakis pavlos rouskas Nikos Scarmeas Mary Yannakoulia Meera Nair Konstantinos Rouskas Mihalis Verykokakis and to all co-authors! https://lnkd.in/gwi4p5N8 #FastBio #metabolism #immunology

🇫🇷🤝🇬🇷 A new chapter in the Sorbonne University (SU) – National & Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) Partnership! This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Professor Bertrand Blondeau (Sorbonne Université, INSERM UMRS938, Centre de Recherches Saint-Antoine, Paris) to the Ιατρική Σχολή ΕΚΠΑ/ NKUA Medical School and the BSRC Alexander Fleming, Greece. As part of this ongoing collaboration, Prof. Blondeau offered to the students of the #International_MSc_in_Molecular_Biomedicine the first lecture by a faculty member from Sorbonne University. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our students for their warm welcome and lively participation! During his visit, Prof. Blondeau met with Prof. George Kollias, Director of the International MSc program, as well as Dr. George Panayotou, Director and Chairman of the Board of the Biomedical Sciences Research Center “Alexander Fleming” He toured the research laboratories where the MSc mobility students will soon be hosted, and visited the Fleming Museum of Contemporary Science. His visit underscored our shared commitment to advancing biomedical education and research, fostering stronger links between Master’s programs in #Paris and #Athens through joint teaching, student and staff mobility, and collaborative research initiatives planned for 2026. Warm thanks to all colleagues at NKUA: Prof. George KOLLIAS, Prof. MARIA TSOUMAKIDOU, Prof. Spiros Efthimiopoulos and Prof. Christina Piperi, at the BSRC “Alexander Fleming”: Dr. #George_Panayotou and Dr. Katerina Papanikolopoulou, and at SU: Prof. Sonia- Athina Karabina and Prof. Elias El-Habr whose efforts continue to strengthen this dynamic academic bridge between our institutions. #SorbonneUniversité #SU #NationalAndKapodistrianUniversityOfAthens #NKUA #UoA #InternationalCollaboration #BiomedicalResearch #HigherEducation #AcademicPartnership Sorbonne Université Faculté des Sciences et Ingénierie de Sorbonne Université Ιατρική Σχολή ΕΚΠΑ/ NKUA Medical School BSRC Alexander Fleming
