I use Hex on macOS with the system language set to Brazilian Portuguese (pt-BR). Since Portuguese isn't one of the interface languages in src/desktop/i18n.rs (LANGUAGE_CHOICES currently has English, Polski, 中文, 日本語, Deutsch, Español, and Українська), the System option falls back to English and there's no Portuguese option under Interface language.
What would help?
Add Brazilian Portuguese as an interface language: a pt entry ("Português (Brasil)") in LANGUAGE_CHOICES and a matching column in TRANSLATIONS, so a Mac set to pt-BR opens Hex in Portuguese. This would work the same way as the Chinese localization in #778.
I'm a native Brazilian Portuguese speaker and happy to review the translations, especially terms like dictation, vocabulary, replacements, and meetings, where literal translations tend to read poorly.
adding a language is just one more entry in LANGUAGE_CHOICES and one more column in TRANSLATIONS, the same as spanish and ukrainian. system detection already turns pt-BR into pt, there's just no column for it yet, so it falls back to english. it'll start behind a labs toggle so the first translations can get reviewed before anyone sees them by default.
every translated string (about 1,100) needs a pt-BR entry or every_translated_string_has_every_language fails, so the first pass will be machine-quality until someone reviews it.
only the first part of the system language is matched, so a mac set to portugal portuguese would also get the brazilian text.
putting a language behind a labs toggle is unusual; with it off, the system setting stays on english even on a pt-BR mac.
once it's on dev, if you can go through the strings and flag terms that read wrong (ditado, vocabulário, substituições, reuniões) that'd help.
there's a candidate fix in #872 but it doesn't build on macos yet
hex didn't have portuguese as an interface language, so system fell back to english on a pt-BR mac. there's now a português (brasil) option behind settings › labs › brazilian portuguese interface, and with it on hex follows a pt-BR system language too. if you can look over the wording (ditado, vocabulário, substituições, reuniões) once it's out that'd help
added in #872, behind a labs toggle that's off by default: turn on it in settings › labs. it'll be in the next dev build
brazilian portuguese doesn't need a labs toggle anymore. it's a normal interface language now (#876): pick Português (Brasil) under general › advanced › interface language, and hex uses it on its own if your system language is portuguese
the strings haven't had a native speaker look at them yet, so if anything reads off let us know
