In the 2024 movie Anora, around the 30:19 mark, while Vanya (aka Ivan) is with Anora (aka Ani), he is shown playing a video game while a maid vacuums nearby. He's using what looks like a white, wireless Xbox controller. The game itself appears to be a third-person, military sci-fi shooter. The scene has gained a little notoriety because Vanya's button-mashing looks completely random and doesn't seem to match the gameplay at all.

Here's a clip of the scene (cropped to just show the game screen). You'll notice the player character stops moving for a few seconds during the scene; that's because Vanya briefly stops playing to talk to the maid before jumping back in:

It looks like Gears of War 4. You can look up some gameplay here and compare. I mostly recognized the yellow boxes you can see in your first screenshot, but the in-game explosion happens at around the 7:25 minute mark.

It looks like they played coop in the movie, since a player needs to use that huge gatling gun to trigger an explosion. But when you take a look at coop gameplay around minute 9:30, it is possible for the second player to stand near the explosion as in the movie.

  • i was thinking of Gears as well, but i find it odd because Gears characters are generally quite broad, while the character in the video is quite thin. maybe the movie's TV aspect ration is wrong? Commented Mar 10, 2025 at 14:30
