For many parents, the idea of buying an electric bike for their kid might initially seem unnecessary. After all, didn’t we all grow up pedaling regular bikes without a motor?

But the more you look at today’s generation of young riders – and the role that e-bikes can play in getting them outside – the more compelling the argument becomes. Huffy is betting on exactly that with its Quantis Kids eBike, a 24-inch electric bicycle designed for riders aged 12 and up.

If you’ve spent any time in a city with shared micromobility, you’ve probably seen fleets of rental e-bikes and e-scooters waiting on street corners. But one company is betting that the next evolution of shared transportation isn’t just another bike or scooter – it’s an electric trike.

London’s Metropolitan Police have already confiscated more illegal e-bikes and e-scooters in 2026 than during the entirety of last year, as authorities continue an aggressive enforcement campaign targeting illegally modified micromobility vehicles.

Massachusetts lawmakers are considering a new statewide framework for micromobility that could finally bring clearer rules to everything from e-bikes and e-scooters to higher-speed electric motorbikes capable of reaching 30 mph, 40 mph, and beyond.

Specialized is pushing the lightweight e-MTB segment even further today with the launch of the new S-Works Turbo Levo R Ultralight LTD, a premium electric mountain bike that tips the scales at just 18.8 kg (41.4 lb) while still packing the company’s latest full-power drive system.

One of the easiest ways to get my attention is to slap the word “premium” on an affordable e-bike. Sometimes it’s justified. Other times it’s… aspirational.

There are few recent advances in the transportation industry that have had as large of an impact on the shifting ways we travel around our cities than micromobility. I’m talking bikes, scooters, mopeds, self-balancing doo-hickeys, etc.

And there are a lot of hills I’m willing to die on in the micromobility world. But one of them is that we need to stop defining such vehicles by what they look like and start defining them by what they do.

Segway has made major strides in the e-bike space recently, but the company isn’t done expanding its electric bicycle lineup just yet.

Following the launches of the Myon commuter e-bike and MUXI cargo bike earlier this year, the company has confirmed to Electrek that it plans to unveil two additional e-bike models before the end of 2026, with both expected to become available in the third quarter. 

Volkswagen is expanding its presence in the e-bike world with a new lineup of premium electric bicycles developed under license by n+. As communities across the US continue grappling with the rapid rise of electric bikes and scooters, one Oregon sheriff’s office is introducing a new tool designed to help identify trouble spots before someone gets hurt.

Ariel Rider has officially opened pre-orders for its new MUDD 72V, a high-performance two-wheeler that blurs the line between electric bikes (in the loosely defined sense) and lightweight electric motorcycles. In fact, the company itself is careful to market it as a “high-performance PPB (private property bike)” intended for off-road and closed-course use.

For some companies, the budget e-bike market has become a race to cram as many headline-worthy specs as possible into a bike without crossing the psychologically important $1,000 mark. Bigger motors, bigger batteries, higher speeds, full suspension – they’re all showing up on bikes that would have sounded impossible at this price just a few years ago.

The new Jasion Hunter Pro is the latest entrant into that category, promising an 1,800W peak motor, a 720 Wh battery, hydraulic brakes, full suspension, folding frame, and Class 3 speeds, all for just $999.

I’ve spent countless hours here at Electrek doing detailed hands-on testing of hundreds of electric bikes. Through thousands of miles of riding, I’ve been fortunate to learn these e-bikes inside and out, top to bottom and front to back. Spend enough time reading the news and you’d be forgiven for thinking e-bikes are society’s newest menace. Every week seems to bring another headline about reckless teenagers weaving through traffic, riders flying down sidewalks, battery fires, or politicians introducing bills to crack down on electric bicycles.

Those stories are real, and coming up on two decades of covering the e-bike industry, I’ve written about many of those issues. But with that experience, including riding hundreds of e-bike models and countless thousands upon thousands of miles on electric bikes around the world, I can’t help but feel that we’ve lost sight of the bigger picture.
