Christian Bason, Ph.D. videredelte detteDo we still have time to catch the opportunities our grandparents had? ⏳ From 23–25 March, we came together in Cairo for the Danish‑Egyptian Dialogue Initiative (DEDI) Foresight Strategy Workshop, three days of asking real questions about the future and how we want to shape it. We kicked off with an honest, interactive session, looking at what’s working, what’s not, and what “innovation” actually means when you try to apply it in real life. Day two was all about youth voices, where different groups shared their thoughts, challenged our ideas, and reminded us that real change only happens when young people are part of the process from the start. By day three, the conversation grew bigger, bringing in partners from across the ecosystem, including public institutions, innovation hubs, and international contributors, to explore how we can build a future that’s more open, more collaborative, and more ready for the world we’re heading into. Missionsorienteret innovation har de seneste år fået stigende national og international opmærksomhed som en tilgang til at adressere store samfundsudfordringer – fra grøn omstilling til forsvar og sikkerhed. Tilgangen stiller nye krav til os som fond, det politiske niveau og vores samarbejdspartnere. Her er fem centraler indsigter fra Danmark og internationalt om, hvad missioner kræver: 🧭 Tydelig retning. Det kræver en klar politisk ambition, en fælles retning for aktørerne og en tydelig rollefordeling mellem politisk niveau, fond, sekretariat og partnere. 🤝 Nye typer af samarbejder. Virksomheder, universiteter, offentlige aktører og civilsamfund skal samles om fælles mål. Det kræver aktiv facilitering, tillidsopbygning og afstemning af incitamenter og forventninger. 📊 Strategisk porteføljestyring. Det kræver analyser af systemiske barrierer og tippepunkter, koordinering mellem projekter samt løbende strategisk læring og prioritering. 🧠 Nye organisatoriske kompetencer. Missioner stiller nye krav til innovationsorganisationer – blandt andet systemforståelse, tværgående koordinering, samskabelse og evnen til at arbejde i kompleksitet og usikkerhed. 📈 Nye måder at måle impact på. Systemiske indsatser kan ikke vurderes alene gennem traditionelle outputmål. Det kræver evalueringer, der understøtter læring undervejs, metrics koblet til transformation og feedback-loops mellem projekter og missionens retning. Over the past three months, Katrina Skellern, Christian Bason, Ph.D. Cathy Foley, Prerana Mehta and I came together to assemble a cross-sector group of leaders to ask a series of critical questions for Australia’s future. With the support of Australian Council of Learned Academies (ACOLA) and University of Technology Sydney, we brought together thinkers and doers from across the country to explore: • What exactly is the invention problem we are facing in the Australian context? • What characteristics of our current system support invention, and what aspects unintentionally constrain it? • If we were designing an invention-enabling research system for Australia over the next 10 or 20 years, what would it actually look like? The Strategic Examination of Research and Development (SERD) aims to strengthen the Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I) system, but unlocking its full potential requires a sharper focus on invention. This means rethinking how we support: • Creativity and bold ideas • Cross-disciplinary collaboration • The environments, people and practices that turn ideas into real-world impact This is just the beginning. We’re building momentum towards a more connected, invention-enabled ecosystem, one that spans research, industry and society. Want to be part of shaping Australia’s invention future? Submit your example by the 31 March! It’s that time of year again. Since 2017, the OECD’s “Call for Government Innovations” has documented new and exciting government practices. With your help, the OECD has published 1000+ innovations, featured detailed cases and analysis in annual “Global Innovation Trends” reports, and invited dozens of shortlisted submissions to present their experiences at high-profile events around the world. 🌐 Why take part? 🌐 Sharing your innovative work can incentivise, inspire, reassure and guide public servants around the world. Those who submit cases can also benefit from: ➡️ Outstanding shortlisted cases will be invited to a global government innovation showcase event in Paris. ➡️ 100+ cases will be published in the OECD OPSI Case Study Library. ➡️ 20+ cases will be featured in the 2026 OECD report on government innovation trends. 💡 What are we looking for? 💡 In a context where governments can be stuck between “business as usual” and the need to act more decisively in a fast-changing economic, societal and technological landscape – innovation is critical. Tak Nigel Edmondson for din historie og refleksion. Den peger ikke alene på betydningen af fremstilling for et samfund men på det kæmpe ansvar som offentlige institutioner har for at skabe de rette betingelser — et økosystem af værdiskabende aktører — som tilsammen gør stadig mere produktiv fremstilling mulig. Historien om Danmark som produktionsland er, som du også indikerer, en historie om betydningen af kloge erhvervspolitiske beslutninger.

Christian Bason, Ph.D. reagerede på detteChristian Bason, Ph.D. reagerede på detteIn 2019, I went to Davos and told a room full of billionaires to pay their taxes. The clip went viral. It felt great. It changed… not that much. So, seven years later, I want to share what we *did* instead. At The School for Moral Ambition, we stopped talking and started building. We just opened applications for our first Tax Fairness Fellowship. That means we're recruiting the sharpest tax specialists, legal minds, policy wonks and campaigners to actually fix the system. To make this possible, we first went to the people. And wow, you showed up. In just a few weeks, over 1,300 small donors – teachers, students, nurses, engineers (people who actually do pay their fair share) – contributed more than $80,000. Then major philanthropists came on board, including Abigail Disney and other members of the awesome Patriotic Millionaires. Next, we recruited an extraordinary program manager: Omezzine Khelifa. Why does this matter? Because for the first time in history, billionaires pay a lower effective tax rate than literally everyone else. They employ armies of lawyers and accountants to pay pretty much nothing in income tax – often as little as ZERO. It's perfectly legal, and it's breaking our societies. But there's momentum. The G20 has pledged to develop a global tax standard for the ultra-wealthy. The UN has begun negotiations on a Tax Convention. France nearly passed a wealth tax for the super-rich. Change is coming, but only if enough talented people are working on this full-time. That's exactly what our fellows will do. A team of 8 brilliant people, embedded in 10 organizations across 3 continents – from Paris to Geneva, Nairobi to New York. ► They'll work at Gabriel Zucman's International Tax Observatory in Paris: the place where the groundbreaking research on how little billionaires actually pay gets produced. ► At the South Centre, Geneva, where global tax rules are being rewritten, at the Canadians For Tax Fairness and at the Patriotic Millionaires in DC. ► At Oxfam Novib and ICRICT, the commission chaired by Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz and Thomas Piketty. ► At The Canadian Tax Observatory, the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, and the Center for Economic and Social Rights in New York. ► Finally, we've got a dual placement with professor Attiya Waris in Kenya, combining the UN mandate on human rights and tax justice with a new think tank (the House of Fiscal Wisdom) on illicit financial flows. Going viral is nice. Building a SWAT team to raise billionaires' taxes? That's better. And to be clear: this is just the beginning. Det var en tid og et sted, hvor industrien satte et tydeligt præg på samfundet, og jeg kan stadig mærke sporene fra industrialiseringen helt ind i kroppen. Men jeg kan også mærke, hvad der fulgte efter. Fabrikker der lukkede. Kompetencer der forsvandt. Lokalsamfund der blev tømt. BNP voksede videre, men forbindelsen til velstand for de mange blev svækket. Da jeg flyttede til Danmark i 90'erne, så jeg noget andet. Ikke et land, der valgte en anden vej. Men et land, der håndterede den samme udvikling mere nuanceret. Det er den erkendelse, der har formet min forståelse af, hvad der egentlig skaber velstand. Næsten alle lande, der er kommet ud af massefattigdom, har gjort det gennem industrialisering eller ved at integrere sig dybt i industrielle værdikæder. Men over tid beskæftiger fremstillingsindustrien en stadig mindre andel af arbejdsstyrken. Det skaber et paradoks, for jo mere produktiv industrien bliver, jo færre mennesker kræver den. Men dens betydning for et lands velstand forbliver enorm. Beskæftigelsen falder, men det gør afhængigheden ikke. Storbritannien viste, at man kan forblive en rig økonomi, selv når industrien fylder mindre. Men den langsigtede pris er tydelig: større regional ulighed, svagere produktivitetsvækst og øget sårbarhed. Danmark fulgte den samme globale tendens i beskæftigelse. Men i stedet for at udhule, opgraderede danskerne. Det resulterede i færre fabrikker, men dybere kompetencer. Ikke mindre volumen, men en anden måde at producere volumen på: gennem digitalisering, automatisering og produktion, der er langt mere fleksibel og præcis. Det lykkedes ikke ved at beskytte enkeltvirksomheder, men ved at investere i hele systemet. Uddannelse, anvendt forskning, infrastruktur og erhvervsklynger. De delte aktiver, som en konkurrencedygtig industri hviler på. Og det er her, den vigtigste lektion for mig ligger. Fremstillingsindustriens betydning er langt større end dens fodaftryk. Fjern kernen, og hele systemet svækkes. For Danmarks velfærdsmodel hviler ikke på høje skatter og omfordeling alene. Den hviler på eksport og virksomheder, der er konkurrencedygtige nok til at skabe værdi uden for landets grænser. Fjern det fundament, og der vil ikke være meget at omfordele. 250 år efter dampmaskinens opfindelse er logikken den samme. De lande, der både udvikler og producerer, former i høj grad stadig fremtiden. Det gjaldt dengang. Det gælder nu. Liggecyklen på billedet er et studieprojekt jeg byggede som ung ingeniørstuderende, og fascinationen af at bygge og forbedre ting har fulgt mig lige siden.

As I said at my zoom surprise party last week (!) this has been a career and life changing role and I’m so grateful to Adrian Brown and Larry Kamener for taking a risk on me and making it happen. I also feel so lucky to have worked alongside a truly diverse team filled with the most creative, values-led, clever, intense, and fun people. Thank you to Keira Lowther, Alli Edwards, Jessica Fuller, Anika Baset and Arthur Shemitz for being such a huge part of my CPI journey. And to Nick Thompson for his leadership over the last year and a half. When I joined CPI, I had already spent many years thinking about reimagining government. While there’s no doubt my thinking was stretched and challenged in this role, when I look back over the last six years, that’s not what stands out most. My biggest learning has been about how to establish, grow, and lead a not-for-profit. And gosh it’s hard. When I joined CPI, I was committed to building an entity that reflected and embodied the changes we want to see in the world — if we want government to embrace a learning mindset, how are we practising that ourselves? If we’re encouraging relational and collaborative approaches, how are we modelling that through the relationships we’re cultivating with other organisations in our ecosystem? If we’re writing about humble leadership, what does that mean for how I need to show up as a leader every day? I’ve made (many) mistakes, I’ve learned lots, and things have definitely felt hard at times. But from all the wonderful feedback I’ve received over the past week, the thing that’s touched me the most is the people who have said, “you’ve shown us that another way is possible”. By this, they mean a form of leadership that is deliberately feminine; an organisation that explicitly values learning and relationships; and a team that is given space to be their full quirky selves, rather than having to contort themselves to fit conventional structures and processes. Everyone keeps asking what next. I genuinely don’t know. I’m going to take some time. Hang with my kids. Read. Write. Swim. Walk. Think. And I know it won’t be long before my head fills with ideas. But, for now, it’s time for a bit of a rest. Below are some pics from the archives...
