Why not bridging the 5GHz Blind Spot in Embedded RF Auditing 📡 Most ultra-small microcontroller platforms limit security research to the legacy 2.4GHz spectrum. When auditing modern enterprise or smart-home deployments, this constraint leaves a massive blind spot where critical management frames and modern WPA3 clients operate. This technical breakdown demonstrates how we leveraged the native Dual-Band Wi-Fi 6 (2.4/5 GHz) capabilities of the RISC-V based XIAO ESP32-C5 to build a standalone, full-spectrum network auditing node. Key Engineering Implementations Covered: • Dual-Band Promiscuous Mode: Simultaneously capturing 802.11ax management frames and identifying hidden SSIDs across both crowded bands. • Non-Intrusive WPA3 Handshake Telemetry: Intercepting WPA3 PMKID handshakes without triggering active client de-authentication defenses. • Edge Spectrum Analytics: Utilizing single-chip Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) equivalents to map real-time channel utilization and RF noise patterns. #EdgeAI 🌿 What if wildlife protection systems could detect threats deep inside forests — without needing internet or human presence nearby? Gavindu Achintha built WildLife AI, a long-range wildlife monitoring system powered by a Raspberry Pi 5, our XIAO ESP32C3, LoRa communication, GPS tracking, and AI-based object detection. Using lightweight YOLO models and a Raspberry Pi NoIR camera, the system can identify unusual activity like human intrusion in protected wildlife zones and transmit alerts over LoRa across remote forest environments. What makes this project especially interesting is how it combines edge AI, low-power long-range communication, and real-world deployment thinking into one practical system. From GPS-based event mapping and local AI inference to battery-powered operation and future waterproof enclosure plans, it’s a strong example of how embedded AI systems can support conservation and remote environmental monitoring.
