Geoff Beyer shared thisSomeone really didn't think this through. The implications on global economics are significant. It also marvelously distracts the US from Ukraine, while in the big picture becomes part of the China-Russia-Iran challenge to US hegemony. Ukraine's play to get closer to the gulf states is a smart move. The speed at which autonomy and AI in warfare are advancing is enormous. 2028 can't come fast enough.Geoff Beyer shared thisThe United States is approaching a complete defeat in its war with Iran — one whose consequences can neither be reversed nor ignored, writes Robert Kagan for The Atlantic. Despite 37 days of devastating U.S. and Israeli strikes that killed a significant portion of Iran’s leadership and crippled its armed forces, Tehran has made no concessions whatsoever. In turn, Trump was reportedly forced to halt the attacks after Iran launched a retaliatory strike on the Ras Laffan gas facility in Qatar on March 18, with repairs expected to take years. The author argues that Iran will not back down from its demand for control over the Strait of Hormuz, thereby gaining global leverage over energy supplies and the ability to dictate terms to Gulf states. This, he claims, would strengthen the Iran–China–Russia axis geopolitically. The war, according to the article, has exposed America as a “paper tiger.” It has also depleted U.S. weapons stockpiles and accelerated the arrival of a “post-American world,” potentially emboldening Xi Jinping regarding Taiwan and Vladimir Putin in Europe. “President Trump likes to talk about who has the ‘cards,’ but whether he has any good cards left to play is unclear. The United States and Israel spent 37 days delivering devastating blows to Iran, killing much of the country’s leadership and destroying much of its armed forces, yet failed to overthrow the regime or extract even the smallest concession from it. The Trump administration now hopes that a blockade of Iranian ports will achieve what overwhelming military force could not. Of course, that is possible, but a regime that could not be brought to its knees by five weeks of relentless military attacks is unlikely to yield merely under the pressure of economic sanctions. Nor does it fear the anger of its own people.”

Geoff Beyer shared thisAs always, Petraeus provides insightful perspective. How to manage the problem of not putting the cart before the horse is challenging in a time of great technological flux. Hopefully the US is not so parochial that it dismisses important insights that Ukraine is providing. You can be sure that Russia is absorbing them and adjusting accordingly. NATO is absorbing them, but whether the US remains part of NATO is an open question. At this time, the US is not a reliable ally. Can't believe I'm saying that.Geoff Beyer shared this21 April 2026: In "The Hill," Isaac F. and I warn that "The Pentagon Could Be About to Make a $55 Billion Mistake." - We note that the huge financial commitment in the budget request to unmanned and autonomous systems with the Defense Autonomous Warfare Group is overdue and should be applauded, but the investment could be undermined by three shortcomings seen at times in the past when new hardware has been introduced. - First, no joint U.S. military concept or doctrine yet exists for the scaled employment of autonomous formations — units that can coordinate at machine speed and execute a commander’s intent when communications are degraded or severed. - Second, there are not yet plans for the considerable organizational changes and the fundamentally different form of command that will be required (we also don't yet see that with the introduction of greater numbers of unmanned systems). Substantial force structure changes will need to be made, and leaders will need extensive training and education on how the new capabilities will be employed. Commanders will, in particular, need to learn how to encode intent in advance — translating objectives, constraints, and priorities into parameters that machines can execute independently. But current training and education pipelines are not yet aligned to produce leaders capable of commanding the anticipated autonomous formations at scale. - Third, there is not yet a system for continuous iteration and rapid feedback that autonomous systems will require. Ukraine’s success with unmanned systems, for example, stems not from any single platform, but from the battle management system that enables it and the rapid feedback loop between operators, engineers, and commanders. The U.S. cannot replicate Ukraine’s model exactly, but it will need to build an equivalent system — one that translates operational experience into adaptation at speed. At present, the U.S. system is not remotely comparable to that established by the Ukrainian military. - In fact, Ukrainian forces — along with their Russian adversaries — are redefining the very nature of warfare on the ground, at sea, and in the air, both over the battlefield and deep within each country’s interior. They have already made sweeping changes in their operational concepts, force structure, training and development of leaders, and feedback loops that drive continuous adaptation. - The U.S. has not yet made similar changes to reflect the lessons already being learned in Ukraine with remotely piloted systems. The result is a widening gap — not in technology, but in the ability to employ new technology as part of a coherent and evolving way of war. - And the advent of truly autonomous systems and formations (and, eventually, systems of autonomous systems) will represent even greater changes to warfare than what we are seeing in Ukraine. #ukraine #DAWG #linkedintopvoices

1moGeoff Beyer reposted thisToday is the International Day of Human Spaceflight. We take this opportunity to celebrate the remarkable humanity shown throughout the Artemis II mission. Over the past week and a half, we’ve witnessed four humans travel farther into space than anyone before. Along the way, we saw moments of joy, grief and scientific wonder... all while millions back on Earth followed their journey. Human space exploration is about showing how far we can go together and this mission was no exception. It has been a true privilege to experience this historic moment with all of you, fellow Canadians. The pride we’ve felt as a country is something that will stay with us forever. Thank you. -

That said, what country would acquire militarily hardware from another country that is openingly threatening your sovereignty and economy? Very difficult in the short term but how to systematically decouple from an ally that is now openly hostile? Geoff Beyer shared thisOne of the best speeches I have ever heard. Time to roll up your sleeves and get to work…Geoff Beyer shared thisI’ll leave this here — for the record and for reflection. Today in Davos, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered a speech that can fairly be described as defining for a new era in international relations. This was not a diplomatic ritual or a collection of abstract slogans, but an honest recognition of reality: the so-called “rules-based international order” has effectively broken down, and it will not return. The core message of the speech was clear: it is time to “take the poster down from the window” and stop living in illusions. Major powers are increasingly using the economy, trade, finance, and supply chains as instruments of coercion. In this reality, middle powers face a stark choice: either retreat into national “fortresses,” or unite to build a new architecture of cooperation based on strength, honesty, and shared interests. Carney argues for what he calls “values-based realism”: • a firm commitment to sovereignty and territorial integrity (with explicit reference to support for Ukraine), • investment in domestic economic, technological, and defense capacity, • flexible coalitions instead of faith in weakened universal institutions, • diversification instead of dependence. Crucially, in this framework Ukraine is not a peripheral issue, but a central test of consistency and credibility in the emerging global order. This speech sends a strong signal: nostalgia for the old world is not a strategy. Strategy begins with naming reality as it is — and acting accordingly. I strongly recommend reading the full text. This is one of those moments when a political speech reaches far beyond the domestic politics of a single country.

In a significant milestone for Canadian defense modernization, General Dynamics Land Systems–Canada (GDLS-C) has unveiled its most advanced Light Armored Vehicle (LAV) platform to date during the CANSEC 2025 defense exhibition. The new LAV 6.0 MkII variant, along the new LAV 6.0 Air Defence represents a quantum leap in land combat capabilities for the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). This latest evolution underscores Canada’s commitment to enhancing its operational readiness and reinforcing its role within NATO and allied missions. The LAV 6.0 MkII builds upon the legacy of the LAV III, which served as the backbone of Canadian infantry mobility for nearly two decades. With the entire LAV III fleet now replaced by the LAV 6.0 series, this fourth-generation armored personnel carrier solidifies its position as the primary infantry fighting vehicle of the Canadian Army. Featuring a battle-proven Double-V hull design, the LAV 6.0 offers superior protection against ballistic threats and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), ensuring crew survivability across diverse combat scenarios. https://lnkd.in/gUaQmWUc

Canada’s state development bank has made its first defence-focused venture investments, backing a rocket startup and an analogue AI semiconductor firm under a new strategy shift. Using its $100m seed venture fund, BDC participated in a pre-seed round for Irréversible Inc. and co-led Canada Rocket Company’s $6.2m seed raise, signalling a clear move into dual-use and defence-adjacent technologies. The change marks a break from BDC’s historic reluctance to engage with defence, as Ottawa ramps up military and space spending. Canada Rocket Company is developing a medium-lift launch vehicle, a programme estimated at roughly $500m to reach orbit, aligned with the federal government’s $182.6m, three-year allocation to establish domestic launch capability. Irréversible is focused on low-power analogue AI chips suited to constrained environments such as drones and distributed sensors, where weight, heat and energy efficiency are critical. Together, the investments illustrate how public development banks are being repositioned to help build national defence-industrial capacity, crowd in private capital and retain high-end engineering talent. BDC’s broader $4bn defence platform suggests this is not a one-off, but part of a structural recalibration of how Canada finances strategically sensitive technologies. #defencetech #space #semiconductors #dualuse #startups

Canada just dropped a $6.6 billion bet that it can build its own war machine. And almost nobody is talking about the most radical part. Yesterday, PM Mark Carney launched Canada's first-ever Defence Industrial Strategy from a CAE facility in Montreal. The headlines are all about the $6.6 billion price tag, the 125,000 jobs, and the 70% domestic procurement target by 2035. Fair enough. But here's what nobody is talking about: this isn't really a defence strategy. It's an industrial policy wearing a military uniform. Think about it. Canada currently awards only about 43% of defence contracts to Canadian firms. Equipment serviceability is abysmal — roughly half the navy's ships, half the air force fleet, and over half of army vehicles are deemed "not serviceable." For years, the assumption was that you could just buy the best kit from allies (mostly the U.S.) and call it a day. That assumption died somewhere between trade threats, annexation rhetoric, and the realization that supply chains you don't control are supply chains that can be used against you. The Build-Partner-Buy framework flips the old playbook completely build domestically first, partner with trusted allies second, buy from abroad only as a last resort. That's a massive philosophical shift for a country that's spent decades outsourcing its own security. But here's the part that deserves more attention: the creation of BOREALIS a research bureau focused on AI, quantum, cybersecurity and the plan to designate select Canadian companies as formal "strategic partners" with protected IP and sovereign control. This isn't just about building more ships or buying different jets. It's about creating a defence innovation ecosystem from scratch, one that turns universities, startups, and mid-size manufacturers into a national security asset. The biggest risk? The strategy is deliberately vague on timelines and sector specifics. The UK's equivalent was far more granular. And as critics have already pointed out, we still don't have an updated defence policy to anchor all of this we're essentially deciding how to build before we've fully decided what to build and why. Execution will make or break this. But make no mistake: the signal has been sent. #DefenceInnovation #CanadaStrong #DefenceIndustrialStrategy #Sovereignty #DefenceTech #BOREALIS #NationalSecurity

TKMS and Isar Aerospace have agreed on a landmark industrial cooperation project to build an independent Canadian space capability. 🚀🇨🇦 The partnership focuses on eliminating a major bottleneck for space-based capabilities: launch capacity. Based on #IsarAerospace’s approach to providing scalable launch options for small and medium-sized satellites, the cooperation is positioned as a key contribution to #TKMS's proposal for the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (#CPSP). The focus is on developing secure space launch infrastructure and integrating it into the national ecosystem. 🤝 Together, TKMS and Isar Aerospace are making a significant investment in the construction of a Canadian space launch complex. Given the substantial market growth for future space launches, this project holds the potential to generate more than Can$10 billion in domestic value creation. The overall economic and strategic value is further underscored by political support from the German federal government. Furthermore, Isar Aerospace will establish a local entity in #Canada to collaborate with Canadian SMEs. This will create sustainable, highly skilled jobs in Nova Scotia and massively boost regional economic growth. #YourMaritimePowerhouse
