We’re hiring at Tailscale. Quite a lot, actually. Tailscale is networking software people enjoy using, mostly because it belongs to the small category of tools that actually “just works.” Turns out, making something disappear into the background and become part of the furniture means a surprising amount of work for us ;). More teams are using Tailscale to connect people, devices, services, environments, partners, and increasingly AI systems. The hard part is doing that without making everyone learn a new networking religion, maintain a pile of special cases, or click through seventeen dashboards named “visibility.” So we need more people with a passion for making hard things simple. Right now, that means a lot of product and engineering work: Go, networking, infrastructure, security, mobile, design, and the strange real-world cases that only appear once real people use the thing. It also means support, success, solutions engineering, sales, marketing, developer relations, finance, and operations. So basically everything. Some roles we’re hiring for: Engineering and product 🔹 Go Core Client Engineer: Canada, US 🔹 Infrastructure Engineer: Canada, US, UK 🔹 Mobile Platform Developer: Canada, US 🔹 Security Infrastructure Engineer: Canada, US 🔹 Security Software Engineer: Canada, US 🔹 Software Engineer, Networking: Canada, US 🔹 Software Engineer, Strategic Projects: Canada, US 🔹 Engineering Manager, Strategic Projects: Canada, US 🔹 Senior Product Designer: Canada, US 🔹 Staff Product Designer: Canada, US Developer relations and marketing 🔹 Developer Relations Engineer: Canada, US, UK 🔹 Brand Designer: Canada, US 🔹 Content Marketing Specialist: Canada, US 🔹 Web Strategy & Growth Manager: Canada, US Customer-facing teams 🔹 Customer Success Engineer: Canada, US 🔹 Implementation Engineer: Canada, US 🔹 Solutions Engineer, Commercial: Canada, US 🔹 Manager, Solutions Engineering, Enterprise: Canada, US 🔹 Customer Account Executive: Denver 🔹 Mid-Market Account Executive: Denver 🔹 Senior Customer Account Executive: Denver 🔹 Manager, Sales Development Representative: Toronto, Vancouver 🔹 Manager, Customer Experience Operations: Canada, US 🔹 Team Lead, Customer Engineering: Singapore 🔹 Team Lead, Customer Support: Canada, US Operations and finance 🔹 Business Operations & Strategy Manager: Canada, US 🔹 Procurement Manager: Canada, US Most roles are remote. A few are hybrid where that makes sense. We try to keep teams small, ownership high, and ceremony low. This is harder than saying it, which is why we need people who care about the actual work more than the theatre around the work. If that’s you, come take a look. After yesterday’s committee hearing, it’s hard to avoid the feeling that Bill C-22 is moving faster than its technical consequences are being examined. That matters to Tailscale, to me, and to anyone building secure infrastructure. Tailscale was founded in Canada. We’re still Canadian, even though our users and customers are all over the world. That gives us a reason to care about this bill directly. The worrying part isn’t that law enforcement can ask providers for data. If there’s a lawful, specific request for data we actually have, we comply. The problem is when laws start pushing companies to collect more data, retain more metadata, or build technical access systems that wouldn’t otherwise exist. That’s how you turn data minimization from a security principle into a compliance problem. For Tailscale’s VPN, this distinction matters. We don’t inspect customer traffic. We don’t log browsing activity or public DNS queries. We don’t have the keys needed to decrypt what our relay servers carry. That’s not a setting we can flip. It’s how the product is built. Once a company is required to keep more metadata, it has created a new database. That database needs permissions, backups, audits, legal process, incident response, and people with access. It becomes part of the attack surface. The safest database is the one you never created. Canada should be a great place to build secure infrastructure. Bill C-22 can still be fixed, but it needs real amendments: narrower scope, less mandatory retention, stronger encryption protections, transparency reporting, vulnerability disclosure, independent oversight, and no requirement to build access tools for hypothetical future requests. Build guardrails for lawful investigations. Don’t build backdoors into infrastructure everyone depends on. I wrote more about this on the Tailscale blog if you'd like to read more. https://lnkd.in/d-tg77i9 #c22 #surveillance #encryption #privacy #canada
