      Why bother coming to Mozilla Festival? Unlike your traditional tech conference, #MozFest is a space where art and culture shapes the conversation on technology. Our mission stays the same: timely justice for all. We build courtroom infrastructure — speech recognition, case management, paperless workflows — designed for low-resource, low-tech settings. Today we serve 11 states and over 6,000 courtrooms across India. With YC behind us, we're taking this work across India and the Global South.       So thrilled to be a host organization for Mozilla Fellows this year! We can’t wait to see how delphine nyaboke builds Our Lens, Our Stories: Co-Designing Bias Detection for African Journalism. Over the past week, we hosted the first two editions of the Co-Designing Bias Detection Hackathon at our Riverside and Nakuru hubs. The hackathons focused on questioning what happens when AI gets African stories, facts, languages, people or contexts wrong. The next Co-Designing Bias Detection Hackathons will take place at our Mombasa and Kisumu hubs, where we invite journalists across print, radio, television, digital and multimedia, as well as content creators and fact-checkers, to contribute to the design process.

      Speech recognition has a real problem: it assumes people speak one language at a time, but most of the world doesn't work that way. Multilingual speakers mix and blend languages constantly, sometimes mid-sentence, and existing ASR datasets largely work well in this  context. At Mozilla Data Collective, we are obsessed with this problem, and with generous support from Mozilla Foundation, we have a new competition to tackle it! The task: build ASR systems that can accurately transcribe code-switched speech across three underserved pairs: 🟠 North American Spanish-English 🟣 Spanish-Nahuatl 🟢 Indonesian-Javanese. You can also use any dataset on the Mozilla Data Collective platform. Why it matters: stronger bilingual ASR extends speech tech to communities globally, for whom multilingualism is just the norm, and offers real potential for enhancing multilingual archives at galleries, libraries, archives, and museums. 💰 $20,000 in prizes across the three tracks, with a bonus award for the best average score across all pairs. Pre-trained, open-weight models are fair game, and external datasets are allowed too, provided they're published to MDC afterward.
