Firefox

Almost every tool I use added AI this year. I don’t remember being asked as those features appeared. I think about that a lot as we bring AI into Firefox. We’ve said features are optional, but that isn’t the same as giving people greater control over the technology they’re using.  AI is here, and it’s useful. It can also be annoying and unwanted. The important thing is that you should get to make the decision about using it.  I wrote about what happened when we gave Firefox users more control over AI in the browser with the ‘kill switch’, what surprised me about how people reacted, and what we’re learning as we evolve the browser. New York just spent a summer falling in ❤️ with ⚽. The World Cup came through, the energy stayed, and last week Wrexham AFC gave the city one more reason to cheer. We were right in the middle of it. The club rang the opening bell at Nasdaq and unveiled the new home kit with Firefox on the front, a proud moment with our team and partners. Then the party moved to Brooklyn, where we launched the kit at KidSuper's space and Colm Dillane designed a one-night-only shirt for the occasion. Two days later, 42,000+ fans packed Yankee Stadium to watch Wrexham take on Liverpool Football Club. So why does a browser sponsor a football club? Simple: most people haven't thought about their browser in years. We want to show up where people actually are and remind them they've got a choice. We've been busy making that choice easier, too. Tab groups just landed on Android. Settings got a full redesign. HDR video is live on Windows. And our favorite party trick, type "shush" in the address bar and every noisy tab goes quiet. What does it take to build a more competitive internet?

We're thrilled to be the Official Web Browser of Wrexham AFC bringing Firefox to the Club and their community.

Two years ago, we asked independent researchers to investigate whether Microsoft was using harmful design tactics to keep Windows users on Edge. They found that it was. Today, the same researchers are back with an update. Their finding: most harmful design patterns remain. Some new ones, in Copilot and Windows Backup, have been added. This impacts 1.4 billion Windows users globally. There is some minor progress. Microsoft has removed some of the harmful design patterns in the EEA, because the DMA required it. Fewer anti-user and anti-competitive tactics does not equal compliance, but it underlines the benefit that ex ante competition regulation can bring for people. As AI investments skyrocket, incentives to override user choice and tie/bundle AI products with existing dominant services only increase. Firefox VPN has reached 1 million monthly active users and 2 million sign-ups. That is 2 million people choosing more privacy, and fewer “Accept All” moments. If AI becomes the front door to the internet, who decides what we see? As AI becomes the interface to the web, browsers have to shift from becoming a navigation tool into a decision making tool. Every AI system reflects a set of priorities. The real question is whose priorities are shaping the experience: the user's, the platform's, or someone else's entirely?
