I recently had the opportunity to attend the “Anti-Racism in the LINC Classroom” training offered by COSTI, Erin O'Neil. facilitated by Dr. Chavon Niles Niles. I’m grateful for this insightful and impactful 5-hour session. The use of real-life scenarios encouraged meaningful reflection on our teaching practices, and the identity iceberg activity was especially powerful in deepening my awareness of how our visible and invisible identities shape interactions in the classroom. This training reinforced the importance of recognizing unconscious bias, addressing microaggressions, and creating inclusive learning spaces where all learners feel a sense of belonging. My key takeaway is the importance of being self-aware and intentional in my teaching so I can recognize biases, avoid microaggressions, and create a classroom where every learner feels respected, supported, and able to participate fully. Thank you, COSTI and Chavon Niles, for such a valuable learning experience that will continue to inform and strengthen my work as an instructor. #LINC #AdultEducation #AntiRacism #Inclusion #Equity #ESL #SettlementServices #Teaching #ProfessionalDevelopment #LifelongLearning #May2026 #COSTI #BridgesNiagara

I had the opportunity to appear, on behalf of COSTI , before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration as part of its study on the provincial distribution of asylum seekers in Canada. Access to housing is fundamental to successful settlement outcomes as is the need for coordinated supports across employment, education, healthcare, and community integration. To do this we need an intergovernmental, multi-year National Asylum and Housing Strategy focused on informed choice, coordinated funding, continuity of support, and measurable outcomes to better support both newcomers and receiving communities across Canada.

COSTI CEO Anita Gupta Stellinga, ICD.D appeared before the House of Commons today to challenge the notion that population-based distribution models alone can resolve the pressures facing Canadian cities and municipalities. In her speech, Stellinga emphasized that moving asylum seekers to new communities without housing, jobs and supports in place doesn't solve the problem — it just moves it somewhere else. She called on the federal government to develop a national strategy that actually measures whether people are finding housing, getting to work and building roots in their communities. The best part is meeting people and hearing about their journeys. The path they’ve been on, what they hope to do and what matters to them. It was an honour to meet so many individuals, who have come from all walks of life to Canada, arriving as refugees and newcomers, and are determined to make a life here, contribute and give back. Mentors who were once starting out, and many of them supported by COSTI , now back to support others and help lift them up. The circle of gratitude, hope and belonging is what keeps us connected, growing and thriving. These positive stories of individual journeys are what our mission is about. 🙏

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make last week's Healthcare Hiring Event such a success. 💙 Alongside World Education Services, Jumpstart Refugee Talent, and the Future Ready Initiative at the The Ismaili Centre, Toronto, we brought together 10 hiring partners, 150+ interview-ready candidates referred by 16 nonprofits, and 6 community colleges — all focused on creating meaningful pathways into healthcare careers. For many newcomers, becoming a PSW requires years of training and real personal sacrifice. Many start from scratch each time they lose a client — and that loss is emotional as much as financial. Access to one meaningful interview can be the difference between an insecure job and a resilient career. With nearly 17,000 open PSW roles across Ontario, connecting qualified newcomer talent to this growing sector isn't just good for individuals — it's critical for the long-term strength of our healthcare system. We're proud to support the partners and organizations making that connection real. To everyone who showed up, invested in people, and helped turn interviews into opportunities: thank you. 🩺✨ AgeCare BrighterDays CBI Home Health Circle of Care, Sinai Health ParaMed Home Health Care SE Health St. Joseph's Home Care VHA Home HealthCare ACCES Employment Achēv Caribbean African Canadian (CAFCAN) Social Services COSTI George Brown Polytechnic Ontario Tech University SEIU Healthcare Seneca Polytechnic Skills for Change Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council (TRIEC) Windmill Microlending YMCA of Greater Toronto triOS College Business Technology Healthcare Health and Supportive Care Providers Oversight Authority Anushka Premji-Osman Jimmy Yang Meghan Gervais Naima S. Thank you so much Tejal Solanki for organizing this. Everytime I come out, I learn new things and become more comfortable with networking. As a programmer, I had a great time chatting with mentors in the tech industry and learning from their perspectives, particularly about their opinions on resumes, interviews, and networking. An advice that stood out to me was that I should not run away from things that I'm uncomfortable with; this is a great advice for career building, and is also helpful for my personal growth and endeavors outside of work. Again, I'm grateful for this opportunity and I appreciate every mentor who took time to come out today. #Networking #YouthNetworking #Mentorship #CareerDevelopment #ProfessionalDevelopment COSTI #Programmer #Developer #TechTalent #RoboticsTalent

One conversation can change the direction of a life. Yesterday, I had the privilege of serving as a mentor at COSTI's Multi-Mentor Networking Event, speaking with young professionals from diverse backgrounds who are working hard to build their future in Canada. Many were looking for career advice. Some were looking for opportunities. But most were looking for something deeper: Clarity. As someone who started his journey working under the heat of Dubai in my father's car garage and later built a career in sales, marketing, business strategy, and human behavior, I know firsthand that success rarely comes from having all the answers. It comes from asking better questions. The most inspiring part of the evening wasn't sharing my experience. It was seeing young people show up, step outside their comfort zones, ask thoughtful questions, and invest in their future. Sometimes the most valuable thing we can offer someone isn't a solution. It's perspective. A conversation. A reminder that their current situation does not define their future. Thank you to COSTI and Tejal Solanki, the organizers, fellow mentors, and every participant who took part in making the event meaningful. Giving back to our community and helping the next generation navigate their path is always time well spent. #Mentorship #Leadership #CareerDevelopment #YouthEmpowerment #Networking #Community #PersonalGrowth #BusinessGrowth #COSTI

Sometimes one conversation, one connection, or one person believing in you can change everything. Many years ago, amanuel (aman) melles opened a door for me through what was supposed to be a 3-week assignment at United Way Greater Toronto. That opportunity turned into an 18-year journey because someone saw potential in me and gave me the space to learn, grow, and contribute. I spent the morning at COSTI alongside an inspiring group of mentors, job seekers, newcomers, and young professionals. Today was a powerful reminder of how much spaces like this matter for people navigating uncertainty, rebuilding confidence, and trying to find their footing in a new chapter of life or career. Through my work, I’ve been incredibly privileged to mentor, coach, and create spaces for others to grow and there’s truly nothing more meaningful than paying forward the opportunities and encouragement that once changed your own life. Thank you Tejal for thinking of me and for organizing such a meaningful event. You never know how one conversation might impact someone’s future.
