Under the title "How researchers built a record-setting quantum circuit," IBM Quantum has published a blog post well worth reading, revisiting our recent Quantum Fourier Transform result. The article offers an accessible look at our 52-qubit QFT demonstration on an IBM Quantum Heron r3 processor, the largest demonstration to date, and explains how our Parity Twine method approaches the problem differently to improve process fidelity as system size grows. It is a result that reflects what becomes possible when strong hardware platforms and new methods from across the ecosystem come together. And there is more ahead: expect further developments in the second half of the year, including a dedicated Qiskit function that will let developers explore the Parity Twine method for themselves. It was a great pleasure to welcome Federal Minister Karsten Wildberger of the Bundesministerium für Digitales und Staatsmodernisierung to the DLR Quantencomputing-Initiative in Hamburg last week — the QSea project site and a key hub for our collaboration as project partners. His visit highlighted strong political support for Hamburg's growing quantum technology ecosystem, bringing together government, research and industry. Together with our consortium partners eleQtron and NXP Semiconductors, we had the opportunity to present the QSea project — an ion-trap-based quantum computer developed entirely in Germany within the framework of the DLR Quantum Computing Initiative. Germany is currently positioning itself as a key player in the global quantum computing race, but maintaining this competitive edge requires a political framework that allows innovation to flourish. At the visit we emphasized that initiatives like the DLR QCI play a decisive role at this stage of commercialization: by acting as an anchor customer, they create the foundation on which emerging technologies can grow, scale and contribute to building strong locations. Introducing the Parity Unfolded Distillation Architecture – a fault-tolerant quantum computing scheme that significantly lowers the required resource overhead. One of the most significant challenges in the field today is scaling fault-tolerant quantum computing. A major bottleneck remains: the massive overhead required for magic state distillation. In our new article "Parity-unfolded distillation architecture for noise-biased platforms”, together with the Universität Innsbruck we propose a new approach to tackle this problem. In a nutshell: Unlike traditional methods that focus almost exclusively on magic T states, our design distills multiple, inequivalent types of magic states. This significantly reduces the resource overhead required for universal, fault-tolerant quantum computing based on noise-bias qubits. Last week, our entire team gathered in the stunning mountains south of Innsbruck for our annual Quantum Architecture Conference. Away from our daily routines, we spent a high-performance week diving deep into the future of ParityQC. Through inspiring talks, workshops and open discussions, we shared our expertise, celebrated recent milestones, sharpened our strategic roadmap and reconnected as a global team. A huge thank you to the St. Michael Alpin Retreat and the breathtaking alpine surroundings for providing the perfect environment to nurture focus and spark creativity. Introducing: “YZ-plane measurement-based quantum computation: Universality and Parity Architecture implementation” Finding measurement patterns that are both universal and have only local interactions is crucial for measurement-based hardware quantum computing platforms such as quantum photonics. The ParityQC Architecture addresses both universality and local interactions for quantum circuits while its modification to the domain of measurement-based computing has remained open. This changes with the new paper "YZ-plane measurement-based quantum computation: Universality and Parity Architecture implementation", where Jaroslav Kysela, Katharina Ludwig, Nitica Sakharwade, Anette Messinger and Wolfgang Lechner demonstrate how a class of universal measurement patterns can be embedded into larger patterns that feature only local interactions and are thus more amenable to existing hardware platforms. This measurement-based version of the ParityQC Architecture, including ParityQC Twine, has close ties to the patterns where the computation is driven purely by measurements restricted to the YZ-plane of the Bloch sphere. The paper expands on the study of these patterns under different notions of determinism. Furthermore, it explicitly constructs universal patterns of this restricted class and thus finishes a line of research on patterns that support universal quantum computation while measurements are restricted to one of the principal planes of the Bloch sphere. ParityQC set a new milestone by executing the largest Quantum Fourier Transform (QFT) to date on an IBM Quantum Heron r3 processor. Using the SWAP-free ParityTwine architecture, the team achieved high QFT fidelity on 52 qubits. It's great to see algorithm and software techniques advancing in tandem with our hardware. ParityQC reports new record on IBM Quantum Processor We are proud to announce a record benchmark in collaboration with IBM Quantum, successfully executing the largest Quantum Fourier Transform (QFT) ever reported! Using an IBM Quantum Heron processor, our ParityQC Architecture processed 52 superconducting qubits, nearly doubling the previous record of 27 trapped-ion qubits set just 24 months ago. This achievement isn't just about numbers – it signals a shift of quantum computing from pioneering academic work towards the era of industrial-scale quantum computing. And it shows that growth not only continues but accelerates exponentially. The near doubling of the QFT benchmark indicates that quantum computing progress could be following similar early dynamics of Moore's Law in classical computing, a development that transformed a research discipline into a global industry. Our Parity Twine method is a quantum circuit implementation strategy that utilizes connectivity-adapted building blocks to optimize gate count and circuit depth across diverse hardware architectures. It outperforms existing state-of-the-art techniques for major quantum algorithms, delivering significant efficiency improvements that even reaches the proven theoretical optimum in some cases. Key highlights of our record together with IBM Quantum include: - We achieved the highest process fidelity ever reported for the unitary QFT reaching 52 qubits, when applied to the QFT on an IBM Heron r3 processor. - Our Parity Twine method using the ParityQC Architecture scales exponentially over previous alternatives. - We significantly lowered gate count, circuit depth and accumulated noise by eliminating SWAP gates. A huge thanks to the team at IBM and our team for pushing the boundaries of what's possible! This shows that European quantum innovation in combination with international leaders in the field can take a global lead in translating theoretical potential into real-world performance. This contributes to solving real-world problems in e.g. drug discovery, cryptography, financial risk modeling and materials science.
