Huawei Pura 90s Pro Max goes global with 200MP tele cam, Pura 90s Pro also unveiled

Earlier this year, Huawei unveiled the Pura 90 Pro and 90 Pro Max for the Chinese market. Now the company is introducing a pair of “90s” models which have largely the same hardware but will be available on the global market.

The two Pura 90s Pro models share a lot of the same hardware. The main differences between them are the screen size – 6.6” for the Pura 90s Pro and 6.9” for the Pro Max – plus things like charging speed and telephoto cameras.

The Huawei Pura 90s Pro Max stands out with the first 200MP RYYB sensor in the industry – Huawei has a long history of preferring yellow sub-pixels over green. This is a large 1/1.28” sensor behind an f/2.6 lens with 4x optical zoom. It is a fixed zoom this time without the complexity of switchable lenses like the Pura 80 Ultra had last year. Huawei did enable 20x telephoto video thanks to real-time RAW processing. The lens offers CIPA 7.0 stabilization (7 stops) and is capable of macro shots as well.

The main camera also has a 1/1.28” sensor, this one configured with 50MP resolution. It’s one of the newfangled LOFIC sensors that delivers a wider dynamic range. And yes, it’s a RYYB sensor. This replaces the 1”-type sensor of the Pura 80 Pro and Ultra models from last year. Anyway, the OIS-enabled lens of the main camera has an adjustable aperture that goes from f/1.4 to f/4.0 in ten steps. Additionally, there is a 40MP ultra-wide camera (RYYB sensor, f/2.2 lens).

The Huawei Pura 90s Pro has a 4x telephoto camera of its own, though this one is equipped with a 50MP sensor. It has an OIS-enabled f/2.1 lens with macro mode (5cm).

The main camera is similar to the Pro Max with a 50MP 1/1.28” RYYB sensor. However, this one lacks the LOFIC technology. Finally, the ultra-wide camera is a more basic 12.5MP unit (RYYB sensor, f/2.2 lens).

As mentioned above, the Pro model features a 6.6” display. It’s an LTPO panel (1-120Hz refresh rate) with 1,256 x 2,760px resolution. It is a flat panel protected by second generation Kunlun Glass.

The Pro Max is a larger phone with a 6.9” display, another flat LTPO panel (1-120Hz) with 1,308 x 2,880px resolution and original Kunlun Glass. Both displays have a special optical design that reduces reflections by up to 70%. Also, a diamond-like carbon coating and silicon nitride ceramic material claim to increase scratch resistance 16x and drop resistance 25x.

Both phones are powered by the Kirin 9030S – a slightly enigmatic chip from HiSilicon that is brand new (the Pura 80 generation used the Kirin 9020), so we’ll have to test it to find out more about it.

One major change this generation is that the phones support 5G, which wasn’t the case for previous Huawei phones sold globally. Plus, there is eSIM support now. Other wireless connectivity includes dual-band Wi-Fi 7 (be), Bluetooth 6.0 (LDAC and L2HC) and NearLink E2.0 (a Huawei-developed alternative to Bluetooth).

Both phones are configured with 12GB of RAM and come with 256GB or 512GB of storage. They run EMUI 16 rather than standard Android. The new version is based on AOSP 16.

Both phones have 6,000mAh batteries for the Chinese and the global markets, however, EU regulations mean lower capacity for units sold in the Union – 5,500mAh for both phones. The Pro Max model has faster charging, 100W wired and 80W wireless, compared to the Pro model, 66W and 50W, respectively.

As you may have noticed, Huawei went the extra step and painted the metal frames to match the colorful gradients of the rear panels. This gives extra pop to the more colorful options like Orange Ocean.

The phones are rated IP68 for submersion (2m depth) and IP69 for resistance against water jets. The Pro Max model is heavier at 230g but slimmer at 8.1mm, while the Pro model weighs 213g and measures 8.2mm thick.

The Huawei Pura 90s Pro and Pro Max will have a gradual rollout. We found them on sale in Malaysia and they should be available in Singapore soon too. They are not showing up on Huawei's European sites yet, but we do have the prices - see the table below. Additionally, there will be a dedicated launch for the Middle East on July 16.
