Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 in for review

In the hand, the Galaxy Z Fold8 is something of a novelty. We've become accustomed to tall and narrow foldables, and this one is the exact opposite. The first impression of many of our editors here at HQ was positive. Maybe it's the fact that many of us lug a giant Ultra cameraphone around daily, maybe it's the Fold8's meager 201g weight, but we like the phone in our hands.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 is quite compact
It certainly feels more interesting than the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, but that's normal; it's a new style of device, whereas the Fold8 Ultra is a small refinement of the Z Fold7 from last year.

Something that makes the squat and small Galaxy Z Fold8 interesting is the fact that it doesn't feel like it gives you any less screen to work with. It's a compact phone when closed but feels just as versatile when you want a bigger canvas for your content when open.
We already did the math of just how much screen estate you get when viewing different content on each screen here, but we've got a few examples to show you.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 shows a smaller website view, but actually beats the larger Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra when viewing a standard 16:9 aspect video. The smaller foldable is also inherently better at viewing back your smartphone photos, as those are 4:3, the same aspect as its inner screen.

Some modern Android tablets even has a 3:2 and near-A4 paper screen panels, so you can already see how the app performs on them. Foldables won't be much different, especially those with a near-square main inner screen.
