i wonder what is the main reason people buy phones at "your ... morefriend few things. Many my or our customers buys phones if their old phone dies.
Many just go to service centre and buy and replace new battery and continue on.
Like i said not everybody regulary updates and some people dont update at all.
Updates are required but not mandatory phone can live without them some just needs calls and text especially elderly people.
Young people at younger age with 100% healthy brain cells and easy to understand ways of phone would love to learn most about theor device and how to use call it a shortcuts to be better and faster with what phone can do.
Older ones refusing to learn new things are happy their phone is working and dont invest their time into learning way of phone.
Like i said many times before i swap my phone every 2 years when my warranty goes off i buy a new device and while my old phone still have a decent value i can get half of the price back which i can use for hollidays or something i need.
A 10 or more years old unsupported phone have zero value and nobody would want it. Maybe for a very low price like 10-20 maybe up to 50 eur.
Just try to sell to someone Iphone 6 no chance or Samsung S6 edge plus. Even the best android of that time all would avoid.
And like oi said many times before with my casual luck my phone would breaks days or few weeks after my warranty goes off. And with a flagship the repair is so expensive everybody rather buy new phone.
With current price increasing there is no sense to fix old if new cost almost the same and a 1 or 2 years odl devices can be bought for half price with 2 years of warranty like i bought my Edge 50 ultra motorola.
New when released costed here in Slovakia 999 eur and i bought it for 600 eur or to be more exact on a carrier plan for 25 eur a month for next 2 years which means 25eur X 24 months equal 600 eur.
Easy as that.
Have no problems to meet you thats up to you.
I know i am not sometimes 100% right but at least i am not wrong with my point of view.

There's this app dial thingy that came after update on my Edge 60 Pro. That is constantly pushing ads and app recommendations, and an attempt to shut it off is inadvertently causing 6-7 apps to install at once. So cumbersome!
Although I do love the phone hardware itself, I have a far superior software experience with my secondary Samsung S23.

It comes down to regional regulations. In the EU, strict e-waste laws mandate longer lifespans, which is why the Edge 70 Max’s EU EPREL energy label guarantees 7 years of updates. In regions without these laws, Motorola can default to the bare minimum. If you want a device's true minimum support period, skip these consumer footnotes and just check the Android Enterprise Recommended list instead. Motorolas often make it to that list.

I buy motorola for the hardware, there will 3rd party update for the greatest hardware, dont care care how many OS update. Edge 40 pro the only greenline free so far

Nobody in india cares about updates for resale value.I don't know if that's really the case in India, but here in North America, a phone that no longer has security updates is not worth much. In fact, there are consumer protection laws in some countries and regions that require used device retailers to clearly inform the customer of the security vulnerability prior to the sale of the device.

danterra, 17 Jul 2026Sony is also disaster, only 2 years of updatesActually, Sony already updated their security policies TWICE since 2024 with the Mark VI and going forward, and unlike Motorola, Sony's update policy are far more streamlined, fixed and assured as they keep what they promised for all Xperia for long while now. Sony is no longer doing 2 OS updates and 3 security patches anymore, even if it's more enforced by Sharp and EU regulations rather than own accord despite planning to do 3 OS updates in Xperia Z3 but stalled due to external pressure AFAIK.
Xperia Mark VI (both 1 and 10): 3 OS updates, both ended with Android 17 and security patches for 4 years until 2028
Xperia Mark VII and VIII (both 1 and 10): 4 OS updates, Mark VII ended with Android 19 meanwhile Mark VIII ended with Android 20, and security patches for 6 years, Mark VII ended in 2031, meanwhile Mark VIII ended in 2032.

I see the conflicting information, from a prospective buyer it would be nice to know how many new Android releases a device would be receiving, but when it comes to security updates things are more straightforward.
The EU mandates at least 5 years of security updates for every phone released in their markets. Unless manufacturers only do those 5 years over there, and not everywhere they sell a specific terminal, we can expect that at least.

I have Razr 50 ultra. Up till spring it had bi-monthly security updates but after that it has changed to monthly updates. It was a surprise but a welcome one. I guess Motorola is upping their game.

I've grown fond of what Motorola offer, I really have. Their approach to support of any kind though is better described as whimsical than policy 🤷♂️

my experience is in contrast to yours.
in my 25 years of working with people (unfortunately),
average phone buyers want a new phone because of 2 main reasons.
their old phone is no longer supported and their battery is almost dead.
so they want just that. a better battery and longer software support.
you can ask your customers why are they changing the phone.
what's the most common answer for them?
there are many people who don't change their phone every or every other year.
especially since average people are more then happy with everything we have on our phones for almost 10 years. they don't need new android versions, they need longer security updates.
and phones are getting much more expensive year after year.
all phones. so why buy a new phone at all? why do you buy your phone every year or every other year? what is so different that you really have to buy a new phone even the "old one" is just 2 years old. 2 years old is not old.... some people are buying new things out of habit. not need.
power users and gamers want to glaze over a new toy that comes every 6 months and pretends to be a new model, with 3% of real use difference between every generation.
so why buying every or every other year?
it's a common sight to see whenever your favorite brand is being criticized,
you find a way to say, that's not something important.
i get it. not for you.
but you can't talk in the name of others.
especially with giving percentages of how many people care for updates,
just to prove your personal narrative, which is...
"new android versions and security updates are not important, because they are not important to me. i change my phone every other year max.)
nor for you and not for many people. i get that.
but it seems you can't take the critics.
you can easily give them, but not take.
that's interesting topic for another time.
let's ask the real question.
if other phones have a longer support for the same price,
it would be great if Motorola offers the same, right?

My old G Power 2021 can stretch up to Android 13 but only got 10 and 11. Not that it's a deal breaker but a tie breaker when considering Motorola.
I also heard that their Android skin got more bloated since 14. Hmm.
