For all the Chinese phones' prowess, I do not want to support either their communist regime or the data collection (Xiaomi has servers in china and Russia). Xperia would be my first choice if I were to change. I generally like Japanese stuff and approach to quality. I love Grand Seiko, for instance, incredible quuality, just look at the dial under magnification. Eagerly awaiting new Xperia, hopefully Sony makes good choices.

It's always been stable. My IEM use a freeDSP cable, cheap upgrade to USB-C without a dongle. Bluetooth headphones used to be much worse, but nowadays, they are easily recommendable

USB C isn't fit for regular headphone use.

Also, the newer stuff that comes out today, does not even last as long as they used to due to poor manufacturing quality (cost cutting / penny pinching is not an excuse for billion dollar companies) and/or planned obsolescence (including big brand names).

I have this a concern since 2005.
No different to frequency hacking / hijacking of cellular signals to scam users.
You don't know if someone is eavesdropping on your audio / conversation when using wireless to black mail you later.

This is something that some people just can not process (or to an extent, I would dare say too privileged that they take internet connectivity for granted or have never experienced internet hardship) why they think and say "you are too poor to afford cloud storage", where in fact it's not about being rich or poor, it about connectivity issue by the providers.

My first smartphone (Windows Mobile) I used with unofficial ROMs after it stopped getting updates, same with Androids before the Priv 10 years ago which never got an option to unlock the bootloader, had only one OS upgrade, used it for 5 years without any issue, the Xperia 1 III I use now received 2 upgrades, been using it for almost 5 years now and will continue using it on Android 13 till it dies as it still works flawlessly. 🤷♂️
Hasn't been anything new with newer OS versions for years. They can only bring worse performance, instability and new bugs. 😄

Fk, 16 Apr 2026Sony should change the 3.5mm jack to 2.5mm balanced. 2.5mm balanced (as well as the more durable 4.4mm balanced) doesn't have any inline mic support, which means you wouldn't be able to take calls with wired headphones anymore. Balanced headphones are also the point where you might be better off with a DAP.

Phone companies are legally required to verify a connected device can access 000 to be able to receive any service at all (and are legally required to block devices that they can't verify work), but it's usually up to the carrier to verify it. Optus and Telstra seem to work great with most devices including specialty ones like Redmagic, Vodafone however are pricks and basically won't verify anything they don't sell (I'm pretty sure that not what Australians would call them but I don't think I can say what they would in a public forum).
In the US I think Mint Mobile might be an option, at least it seems to be more compatible with a lot of the non mainstream devices.

Those that don't get more ... moreEven 10 years after the iPhone 7 came out Bluetooth still doesn't actually work properly. My QC45s (which I'm only using wireless because the terrible 2.5mm input doesn't hold a cable anymore, seriously the ANC is truly incredible but f*ck Bose) still lose connection about 30% of the time. That's better than others I've tried but it's still pretty bad, probably because the real world isn't an RF chamber.
Then of course there's the issue that they're all going to be e-waste eventually. First (and last) pair of Bluetooth buds I bought stopped charging after 5 weeks. No, seriously, they were rebranded Edifiers for about £60 and all I got out of them was 5 weeks. Meanwhile some random £20 IEMs recommend by an Australian are at 5 years so far on the cable they came with and survived an accidental wash cycle. Suffice to say I won't be doing Bluetooth earbuds again.

Asus managed that perfectly fine when they were still around which you still had a charging port to use regardless of what your headphones were, and these things cost pennies at scale. If companies 'can't manage' to get it to fit then at some point you'd have to ask why you're even paying them in the first place.
